Committee approves Adak land transfer
The U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee approved a bill to transfer 47,000 acres to the corporation.
The corporation wants to develop the island community, once home to a large Navy base. The former base contains hundreds of homes, as well as schools, warehouses, a power plant, an airfield and one of the Pacific’s best deep-water ports.
The corporation hopes to turn the island into a fish processing and refueling center.
The bill is sponsored by Sen. Frank Murkowski, R-Alaska. It calls for the corporation to relinquish an equal number of acres of land it selected from the federal government.
The measure still must be approved by the full Senate.
