The fourth annual Red Cross Taste of Mardi-Gras: A Night of Cajun Inspiration again entertained and achieved its goal of providing funding for Alaska disaster relief.

“We are still adding up the receipts to get a final tally, but we think that we were able to raise over $50,000,” said Kelly Hurd, director of development and marketing for Red Cross Alaska.

This year's event drew more than 350 people, some who dressed in costume, others who came to enjoy the food from 12 local restaurants that donated their support on behalf of the fundraiser.

Chefs from the Alyeska Resort, Cafˇ Croissant, the Crow's Nest, Double Musky Inn, The Flying Machine, Glacier Brewhouse, Gumbo House, Kincaid Grill, Kinley's Restaurant, Mixx Grill, Orso and Pi prepared Cajun cuisine for the crowd.

While all the food samples were deemed excellent, of particular interest were the Cajun cupcakes by Mick Hugg of Mixx Grill and the banana lollipops by Hannah Robertson of Pi.

Pamyua preformed on the Anchor Pub & Club stage during the first half of the evening as guests were arriving to view the auction tables and get a taste of Cajun inspiration. Despite the presidential debates, held the same evening, the event attracted a steady flow of people who gathered to spend their Friday night supporting the Red Cross.

Ten percent of the earnings will go toward a scholarship fund for the Alaska Travel Industry Association, the rest of the proceed will go to Alaska disaster relief, according to Hurd.

Tickets sold for $50 per person, $90 for couples. The event was sponsored by Alaska Airlines, Alaska Travel Industry Association, the Anchor Pub & Club, Bradley Reid and Associates, CH2M Hill, KTUU Channel 2 Anchorage, New Northwest Broadcasters, Pamyua and Petrotechnical Resources Alaska.
