Movers & Shakers



  Blocker    
Carl Blocker Sr. has been hired as the new quality control inspector for STEELFAB, the state's largest locally owned steel fabricator. Blocker has been a quality control inspector since 1990. He is also an American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector. The last 20 years of his 26 years of steel fabrication experience has been working in Alaska for other oil field service companies. Blocker's duties at STEELFAB include ensuring the complete quality control process for customers from the beginning of each project to its completion.


  Gay    
Colville Inc. announced that Becky Gay has taken the position of special assistant to the president of the Prudhoe Bay-based company. Her duties include communications, business development, external affairs and solid waste utility work, with special projects for Colville's subsidiaries, Brooks Range Supply and the Prudhoe Bay General Store. Gay received a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1983. She previously worked with the Resource Development Council, acting as its executive director and staff lobbyist. She served in 1991-92 as former Gov. Wally Hickel's ANWR coordinator. In 1997, she went to work for Mayor Ben Nageak of the North Slope Borough. From 2000-02, Gay helped start up Colville's solid waste utility and handled communications and external affairs. Gay later went to work as a legislative aide for Rep. John Harris, and then worked for the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority and the Alaska Energy Authority.

USKH Inc. has expanded its mechanical department with the addition of Gerald Hendrickson, P.E., as mechanical engineering project manager. Hendrickson will work in the Wasilla office. Thomas Reber has joined the Wasilla office as a senior land surveyor. Hendrickson, holds a master's degree in engineering management from the University of Alaska Anchorage and a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Wisconsin. He was previously employed as hospital facilities engineer manager for the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, Alaska Native Medical Center. Reber has more than 30 years of surveying experience and is a Wasilla resident. USKH is an employee-owned, full-service design firm that offers architectural, engineering, planning and land surveying services to clients throughout Alaska and the Pacific Northwest.


  Hoflich    
Porcaro Communications Inc. has announced that Daryl Hoflich, a veteran of the Alaska marketing and advertising community with more than 32 years of experience, will be the agency's new creative director. Hoflich most recently was vice president and stockholder of Bradley Reid and Associates. Hoflich will lead creative direction on projects for current Porcaro clients including GCI, the Alaska Railroad, CIRI and Shell Alaska. As creative director for Bradley Reid, Hoflich was instrumental in the development of award-winning campaigns for Providence Alaska Medical Center, Alyeska Pipeline, AT&T Alascom, the Alaska Travel Industry Association and ConocoPhillips. Porcaro Communications is the Anchorage-based parent company for Porcaro Advertising with offices in Anchorage, Vancouver and Los Angeles, and Bernholz & Graham public relations with offices in Anchorage and New York. Established in 1982, Porcaro is one of Alaska's largest full-service agencies.

Custom software development firm Resource Data Inc. has hired three new employees. Kevin Dickerson was hired as a programmer/analyst. He holds a bachelor's degree in computer science from the University of Alaska Anchorage. A member of the Association for Computing Machinery since 2004, Dickerson is particularly interested in human-computer interaction and scientific visualization. Jason Jones was hired as a programmer/analyst. Jones received his bachelor's degree in computer science from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 2006. He is proficient with C#.Net, C++, Ruby, JavaScript, XML, DHTML, CFML and SQL. Jones is active in the Linux and open-source communities and is keen on staying current with emerging technologies such as Ruby on Rails and AJAX. Damian Schroder was hired as a GIS programmer/analyst. Schroder received his bachelor's degree from the University of Georgia in 1998. He has received several certifications: ESRI Building GeoDatabases II, ESRI Introduction to ArcObjects VBA and Erdas Orthobase Desktop Mapping. Schroder is proficient with C#.Net, Oracle, ArcObjects, ArcGIS, ArcSDE, SQL, DHTML and VBA. With offices in Anchorage, Juneau, Fairbanks and Boise, Idaho, RDI is a custom computer software applications development firm with more than 85 programmers.


  Spangler    

  Valenote    
The architecture and planning firm of Bezek Durst Seiser promoted two of its staff members. Architects Eric Spangler and Victor Valenote have been named associates of the firm. Spangler has more than 14 years of architectural experience and a master's degree in architecture. He joined the firm in 1998 and designed the AIA Alaska Chapter award-winning Alaska Department of Natural Resources Plant Materials Center in Palmer. His current projects include the Kenai courthouse addition for the Alaska Court System and a new housing project for the U.S. Coast Guard in Cordova. Valenote has more than 14 years of architectural experience and a master's degree in architecture. He has been with the firm for the past six years and has provided his design expertise on many award-winning school and university projects. He is currently working on the UAF BIOS facility design and Nome Consortium Library planning study.

The Alaska Zoo recently hired Eileen Floyd as the organization's development director. Floyd will spearhead fundraising and marketing efforts for the zoo. Floyd brings 16 years of Alaska public communication experience to the job. For the past three years, Floyd has designed and implemented public relations and marketing campaigns for a variety of clients. Prior to that, she spent 13 years as a television journalist in Alaska. Floyd holds numerous awards for her marketing and communication efforts.
