House Finance Committee takes up Senate bill to stash surplus in savings
By Bradners’ Alaska Legislative Digest
The House Finance Committee takes up Senate Bill 296 Monday, March 10, the supplemental spending bill that deposits $3.6 billion of the current projected revenue surplus into state savings accounts and also appropriates capital project funds vetoed by Gov. Sarah Palin last summer. The bill is on a fast track. Legislators want to get it on Palin’s desk in time for an override vote before adjournment April 13 in case Palin vetoes the spending again.
Lawmakers’ strategy may also be to use the bill as a tactic to negotiate with Palin over items in a capital spending bill for fiscal year 2009 now being developed.
