Sen. Joe Thomas’ bill to expand timber harvest in Interior Alaska with the addition of 40,000 acres to the Tanana State Forest is ready for a Senate floor vote. Senate Bill 229 was moved without amendment through the Senate Finance Committee with a single hearing on Monday, March 3. The bill makes a variety of exchanges of state land, including an addition of 4,300 acres to the Minto Flats State Game Refuge west of Fairbanks. For the most part the legislation adds high-value timberland to the forest, which is open to all uses but managed primarily for logging. The bill has encountered no opposition. |
