SB-229, expanding Tanana State Forest, ready for Senate vote
By Bradners’ Alaska Legislative Digest
Sen. Joe Thomas’ bill to expand timber harvest in Interior Alaska with the addition of 40,000 acres to the Tanana State Forest is ready for a Senate floor vote. Senate Bill 229 was moved without amendment through the Senate Finance Committee with a single hearing on Monday, March 3.
The bill makes a variety of exchanges of state land, including an addition of 4,300 acres to the Minto Flats State Game Refuge west of Fairbanks. For the most part the legislation adds high-value timberland to the forest, which is open to all uses but managed primarily for logging. The bill has encountered no opposition.
