The Senate Labor and Commerce Committee held hearings Feb. 28 on Senate Bill 113, requiring employers to allow reasonable break time for nursing mothers as well as a secure and sanitary room. Supporters for the legislation said many employers do not provide adequate time for nursing mothers, which has the effect of discouraging breastfeeding, which can contribute to health problems with infants and young children. The bill was held for further consideration and may be brought up for action on March 3. The sponsor of the bill is Sen. Johnny Ellis, D-Anchorage. |
