Mover & Shakers: Feb 20 2009


Kirsten Ball has joined the Tatitlek Corp. as senior vice president of finance. She worked previously for Deloitte and Touche, where she earned her certified public accountant designation. She later moved to KPMG, a global network of professional services firms, as a senior manager in audit and assurance before going to work for Arctic Slope Regional Corp. in 2001.


  Organek    

Jeff Organek, a civil engineer in WHPacific's Fairbanks office, has earned his professional engineering license from the state of Alaska. Organek has been with WHPacific since May 2005 and has worked in the construction trades for more than 10 years, including two years as a construction inspector for an independent materials testing laboratory. WHPacific Inc., formerly ASCG Inc., is a full-service architecture-engineering firm founded in Anchorage in 1981.


  Price-Younts    

Melody Price-Yonts is the new director of the SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium's Division of Behavioral Health. The division provides full-service psychiatry, clinical psychology and behavioral health clinician services in communities in Southeast Alaska. Price-Yonts was the division's acting director. She holds a master's degree in social sciences from Xavier University. She grew up in Haines. Prior to her arrival at SEARHC, Price-Yonts was an active duty soldier in the U.S. Army, and also worked in health care management positions with government and private health care organizations in the Cincinnati area.


  Hansen    

Paula Hansen, a graduate of the University of Minnesota and a presidential scholar, has joined WHPacific in Anchorage as a community planner and GIS analyst. Hansen earned a bachelor's degrees in architecture and environmental design from the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis/St. Paul in 2006. She served as an intern with the city of Minneapolis and GIS technician for Facet Technology Corp. before joining WHPacific.

Grace Berg Schaible has received the President's Medal for Excellence from the University of Alaska, given periodically in recognition of unwavering dedication to the university. Schaible has made a number of contributions to public life in Alaska. She was the first, and so far only, woman to hold the office of Alaska Attorney General. A native of Juneau, her University of Alaska service began in her freshman year of college, when she was named Outstanding Freshman Woman. She received a similar honor in her senior year. Later, she was appointed to the Board of Regents, and served many years on the University of Alaska Foundation's Board of Trustees. She also has served on the boards of the Alaska Permanent Fund Corp. and Nature Conservancy in Alaska, plus a number of local and statewide public advisory committees. Schaible received an honorary doctor of laws degree from UAF in 1991 for her "distinguished and unselfish service on behalf of the state of Alaska and her thoughtful practice of law benefiting Alaska's people."

Andy Zanto has been promoted to associate creative director of Nerland Agency Worldwide Partners. In this new position, Zanto helps to develop creative strategy and execution for all advertising mediums. He also supervises Nerland Agency's in-house video production and edit suite, and is the lead on all digital opportunities. Zanto joined the agency in 2000 as an art director with a background in Web development and video production. The Nerland Agency offers a full spectrum of Web-based solutions for digital communications needs, exclusive to the Alaska market.

Rik Bucy of Soldotna and Karen Rey of Anchorage have joined the board of directors of Kenai River Sportfishing Association. Bucy is the retired general manager of Tesoro Northstores, the chain of gas stations and convenience stores throughout the Railbelt and Kenai Peninsula. This is his second stint on the board. He is a past chairman of the board and of the Kenai River Classic. Rey is a registered nurse and sales manager with St. Jude Medical. Kenai River Sportfishing Association is a nonprofit, membership-based educational and conservation organization whose goal is the preservation and improvement of salmon habitat while promoting responsible sportfishing on the Kenai River.

Dan Winkelman, vice president for administration and general counsel of the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corp., has been appointed to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee on Minority Veterans. Winkelman is a Deg Hit'an Athabascan Indian from Anchorage, whose family is originally from Shageluk and McGrath. He has worked in his current position to improve access to health care and expand quality services to veterans in rural communities. The committee advises the Secretary of Veterans Affairs on the administration of benefits to minority group members, including: compensation, health care, rehabilitation, outreach and other services provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The committee also assesses the needs of minority veterans and recommends program improvements.

Andy Anger of the University of Alaska Fairbanks Tanana Valley campus has been elected as chairman of the board of the Fairbanks Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Grant Leader and Cricket Gartrell of RISE Alaska LLC are now project management professional accredited through the Project Management Institute. Leader has experience in managing and inspecting construction projects for government and commercial clients. Leader has more than 20 years experience managing and inspecting construction projects for government and commercial clients. Gartrell has over 20 years experience in construction administration, office administration and financial management. RISE Alaska provides construction and program management services on major capital improvement projects, multi-phased planning developments and building programs throughout Alaska. Established in 1994, RISE has expanded to include offices in Anchorage, Juneau, Fairbanks, and RISE Group/RISE International headquartered in Chicago.

Tom Konop, a financial advisor and senior vice president-wealth management with Smith Barney, has been recognized in Barron's as the No. 1 financial advisor in the state of Alaska. The article on Konop appeared in the Feb. 9 issue of Barron's, and is based on the methodology and criteria of independent research organization Barron's Winner's Circle. Konop has been with Smith Barney for more than 16 years. A graduate of Tufts University with a bachelor's degree in economics, Konop is a member of the firm's directors' council.

Larry Harris, dean of the University of Alaska Southeast, took command Feb. 1 as chairman of the board of United Way of Southeast Alaska. Michelle Prebula, a state investment officer, is the new chair-elect. Sheri Croll, controller for Bartlett Regional Hospital, was re-elected as treasurer. Scott Jones, assistant state comptroller, was elected as secretary and Michelle Calvin-Casey, community relations director for Bartlett Regional Hospital, is the past chair. Lance Stevens, regional vice president of AlaskaUSA Federal Credit Union, also sits on the board. Brigitte Lampert, Rodlynn Smallwood, and Jared Rennie have been promoted to become managers of three Anchorage branches of Northrim Bank. Lampert, manager of the Seventh Avenue branch, has more than 17 years of banking experience. Smallwood, at the Northrim customer service center, has 13 years of banking experience. Rennie, at the bank's Huffman branch, Northrim's only in-store branch, has more than 15 years of customer service experience, the last six in the financial services industry.

Rusty Wilde, Steve Nigg, Clint Channell and Aaron Sirois, all mechanical engineers with PDC Inc. Engineers in Anchorage, have received their LEED-AP certification, bringing the firm's total LEED-AP certified staff to eight. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and demonstrates energy efficiency and sustainability in design and construction. Wilde has eight years of experience in mechanical engineering and has experience with all mechanical engineering requirements. Nigg is a registered professional mechanical engineer with 18 years of experience in Alaska. Channell, a graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida, joined PDC's mechanical team in 2006. Sirois, a graduate of the University of Maine, joined PDC in 2007 and graduated from the University of Maine with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.


  Wiegele    

Margot Wiegele is the new director of marketing and communications for Northern Air Cargo. Wiegele has been with NAC for six years in their sales and marketing departments. She is based at NAC's corporate headquarters in Anchorage, where she is responsible for the company's public relations, advertising, communications and corporate image.

Jeanette Anderson Moores has returned to the Anchorage Convention and Visitors Bureau as vice president of communications and marketing programs. Moores was AVCB's public relations manager from 2000 to 2003. She then continued contracting with ACVB through her own public relations company, A M Communications, through January 2009. Moores will be responsible for local, statewide, national and international public relations, advertising, marketing, graphics, branding image, Internet and collateral materials developed for ACVB and its marketing partners. Moores began her career as a public relations account manager for Ogilvy & Mather/West.

Nance Larsen has received the Communicator of the Year award from the Alaska chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. The award also recognizes her volunteer service to PRSA and other civic organizations including the Duct Tape Ball, the Anchorage Cultural Council, the American Marketing Association and others. Over a 20-year career, Larsen has worked in a marketing capacity promoting events such as the New York City Marathon, Summer League and six Olympic games. Larsen received her accreditation in public relations in 2003. She was elected as president-elect of the PRSA Alaska chapter for 2009 and will serve as president in 2010.

Becca Carroll and Charles Evans of AMC Engineers have earned their professional engineer licenses. Carroll, with AMC since 2003, has concentrated on heating and ventilation designs. Evans has been with AMC since 2005. His specialties include lighting, power and special systems design. AMC Engineers is an Alaska engineering firm specializing in mechanical, electrical, control and telecommunications systems design and construction.

Yoshi Ogawa, of the Alaska general office of New York Life Insurance Co., has received the firm's Rookie of the Year Award, which recognizes agents who achieve case rate milestones in their first year of employment. Ogawa is a graduate of Arizona State University and holds a postgraduate certificate from the American Graduate School of International Management. New York Life Insurance Co., a Fortune 100 company founded in 1845, is the largest mutual life insurance company in the United States.

Tammy Ferriss has been promoted to vice president at Northrim Bank. An employee of Northrim since 2003, Ferriss is the bank's community development compliance and information security manager, responsible for managing lending compliance, privacy, information security and community development. She is a certified regulatory compliance manager and a board member for Alaska JumpStart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy.


  Tesch    

Mary Tesch was promoted to senior vice president of administration for the Tatitlek Corp. She joined the company in 2007 as director of human resources, was promoted in 2008 to chief human resources officer, and now to this newly created position. Tesch received the distinguished member award from Northwest Human Resources Management Association in 2008 and is an active leader in several professional organizations, including the Anchorage Society for Human Resource Management, the Human Resources Certification Institute and Soroptomists International of Anchorage. She has also earned the senior professional of human resources certificate.
