A suborbital sounding rocket was successfully launched Feb. 6 at Poker Flat Research Range as part of the Rocket Auroral Correlator Experiment project. The Black Brant XII rocket captured measurements to deduce characteristics about the processes that create the aurora. The payload instruments were custom-designed to take measurements faster than similar instruments used in the past. The Poker Flat Research Range is owned by the University of Alaska and operated by the Geophysical Institute under contract to NASA.

Pacific Utility Equipment Co. has been acquired by Terex-Telelect Inc., a Watertown, S. D. subsidiary of Terex Corp. based in Westport, Conn. Pacific Utility provides services to customers in Alaska, Hawaii and nine Western states. The company serves the electric utility, telephone, cable television, municipal and contractor markets with new equipment, rental equipment, parts and service.

The Anchorage Economic Development Corp. has completed development of an improved Web site at (www.aedcweb.com). The site will market Anchorage as a business location and provide site selection consultants and interested companies with current information on the municipality. An Investor Spotlight section will be highlighted on the site's home page, and each week an investor's logo, company description or short article will be featured. Alaska Communications Systems Inc. and Municipal Light & Power helped fund the Web site design and development.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks has launched a virtual tour of its campus at (www.uaf.edu/virtualtour/). The 12-stop tour offers a chance to explore and experience UAF from the William R. Wood Campus Center in the core area of campus to the International Arctic Research Center on West Ridge. The multimedia tour includes more than 200 images, live Web cameras, digital video clips and interactive 360-degree views of the campus as well as links to additional information.

Media

The Alaska Native Heritage Center has established a recording studio where individuals and families can record stories and oral traditions on video and audio formats. Use of the recording studio is free as long as the intended recordings are consistent in preserving and perpetuating information about Alaska Native history and cultures and can be made available at the center for educational purposes. Studio users will receive a copy of their finished recordings. The Alaska Science and Technology Foundation, the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences and Calista Corp. provided funding for development and operation of the studio. The Alaskan Aviation Safety Foundation is conducting its 12th annual Aviation Memorial Scholarship competition. The scholarship funds were received from families and friends of former Alaska aviators. The application deadline is March 31. For eligibility criteria and additional information, call 907-243-7237.

The University of Alaska Alumni Association will award four $2,000 scholarships during the 2002-2003 academic year to one student each in the College of Business and Public Policy, the College of Technical & Community Education, the College of Education and the School of Engineering. The Valley Hospital Association will award $10,000 in scholarships in 2002 to support the educational development of Matanuska-Susitna Borough residents interested in entering the health care field. Standing Together Against Rape is recruiting volunteers for its upcoming free training Feb. 21. Graduates of the training staff the agency's 24-hour crisis line. The Alaska Conservation Foundation is seeking applications from undergraduate and graduate college students interested in interning with Alaska conservation organizations or resource management agencies.
