Anchorage's National Engineers Week: Feb. 15-21

National Engineers Week (E-Week) is an annual event to bring attention to the work and contributions of engineers. Anchorage's E-Week committee, comprised of members of local engineering societies, has a schedule of activities for adults and children.

Feb. 16-21

E-Week Exhibits

Loussac Library features exhibits by local engineering companies and engineering societies.

Feb. 17

Liquid Assets

The Anchorage Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers presents a free viewing of the Emmy Award winning PBS documentary "Liquid Assets: The Story of Our Water Infrastructure" at Loussac Library's Wilda Marston Theater at 6:30 p.m.

Feb. 18

Career Fair

The University of Alaska Anchorage School of Engineering is holding a career fair on from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Feb. 20

Student Tours

The local E-Week committee has arranged tours of H2Oasis and the UAA School of Engineering for local high school students with an interest in engineering. This tour includes presentations by local engineers and involves students from Anchorage's public and private schools.

Feb. 19-20

School Presentations

Local E-Week committee reaches out to local schools, giving them an opportunity to learn more about engineering. This year's presentations are expected to benefit more than 900 local students.

Feb. 21

Student Competitions

The UAA School of Engineering and local engineering societies sponsor student competitions for local elementary, middle school and high school students. At UAA. Student competitions are from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and demonstrations from 1 to 2:30 p.m. An awards ceremony is scheduled at 3:10 p.m. in the Engineering Building Atrium

Feb. 21

Awards Banquet

The annual E-Week Awards Banquet includes presentation of the Engineer-of-the-Year Award, as well as Junior Scholarship Awards. This year's guest speaker is Syun-Ichi Akasofu, founding director and professor emeritus at the International Arctic Research Center, University of Alaska Fairbanks, presenting "The recovery from the Little Ice Age as the main cause of the present warming." Tickets are $40 per person. Contact David Nicolai at David.Nicolai@CH2M.com for banquet reservations. Held at the Millennium Alaskan Hotel. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with dinner at 7:15 p.m.
