Usibelli posts no lost-time injuries

Officials with Usibelli Coal Mine in Healy said the company achieved an all-time safety record of no lost time injuries. The record extends from January 2004 to January 2005, a total of 720 days of continuous operations without a lost-time injury. Usibelli general manager Keith Walters said this was a significant accomplishment, considering the mine's challenging working conditions. During calendar years 2004 and 2005, the company produced about 1.5 million tons of coal for delivery to six Interior Alaska power plants, and for export to South Korea and Chile. Usibelli Coal Mine is a third-generation family-owned business and is the only operational coal mine in Alaska. The surface coal mine has been in operation since 1943.
