Cargo facilities at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport are going to be upgraded for fueling and loading sometime this year.
The project that is open for bid will improve and reinforce parking spots for cargo aircraft that stop for fueling at the Anchorage airport.
“This is between a $10 million to $20 million project,” said Jim Amundson, project manager for the state Department of Transportation's contracting division.
The project will improve five hardstands for Boeing 747-400 and 800 model aircraft. Hardstands are parking areas that are reinforced to take the weight of a loaded 747 cargo freighter.
The bid also includes taxi lanes to and from the hardstands that will be lit with edge lights. The improvements will also include an extension of adjacent taxiways and drainage along runway 7-11.
“This will also include an improved fueling system for the big birds,” Amundson said.
The project will be paid for by cargo entitlements from Federal Aviation Administration grants and FAA discretionary funding.
According to Amundson, the bids are set to close Feb. 9 in Anchorage.
The project completion date is set for Oct. 31, 2007.
Bidding documents may viewed at the DOT offices in Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau. The documents can also be purchased for $100 a set from the state of Alaska, from the Central Region Plans Room, 4111 Aviation Ave. in Anchorage.
