On The Move

First National Bank Alaska and its 750 employees gave more than $600,000 to Alaska communities in the fourth quarter of 2003. That brings the total yearly contributions to more than $1.5 million. The financial institution centered much of its support on education, giving significant sums to the University of Alaska Anchorage, Alaska Pacific University, Alaska Council on Economic Education, Sheldon Jackson College, the Prince William Sound Science Center and the University of Alaska Foundation. The bank also gave to youth organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club, the Alaska School Activities Association, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Junior Achievement and Scouting groups. FNBA was established in 1922 and is the state's largest Alaskan owned and operated bank with 27 branches throughout the state.

Elisah Remington Baker IV, a professor of logistics at the University of Alaska Anchorage, is the recipient of the Harold T. Caven Professorship administered by the University of Alaska Foundation. The two-year professorship and its annual cash award of $10,000 is aimed at assisting its recipient in carrying out activities and projects designed to enhance business and finance at UAA beyond normal faculty assignments. Baker proposed to develop a Web deliverable mini-course on systems theory and its application to business. The professorship was established in 1974 by Loretta Caven, the widow of Harold T. Caven. The later Caven came to Alaska in 1943 and served as director and vice president of First National Bank of Anchorage.

The U.S. Small Business Administration plans to open two more Alaska offices, one in Juneau and the other in Fairbanks. The Fairbanks office will be led by Scott Swingle, who was the director of the University of Alaska Fairbanks Small Business Development Center for the past five years. Todd Saunders, former executive director of the Juneau Chamber of Commerce, will head up the Juneau office. For further information regarding opening dates, visit the SBA Web site at www.sba.gov.
