Election workers are being recruited to work the Anchorage Municipal Election on April 5 from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Training is provided and is mandatory. Applicants must be registered voters. The position pays $9.50 per hour. Contact Guadalupe Marroquin, election coordinator at (907) 343-4311.

Credit Union 1 announces scholarship

Credit Union 1 has begun accepting applications for the 19th Annual Bill Countryman scholarships. Applicants, or their parent or guardian, must be members of Credit Union 1 for at least one year as of April 1. Individuals of any age continuing education at an accredited college or vocational school; senior high students applying for admission to an accredited college or vocational school; and students in junior high school or high school through the 11th grade applying for the Johns Hopkins CTY program are eligible for a scholarship. Applications are available in school districts throughout Alaska, at Credit Union 1's branches, online at www.cu1.org and by mailing a self-addressed stamped envelope to: Administration, Credit Union 1, 3500 Eide St., Anchorage, AK 99503. Applications must be postmarked or delivered to a Credit Union 1 branch no later than April 1.

ASRC Energy Services Lynx Enterprises awarded contract

ASRC Energy Services Lynx Enterprises Inc. has been awarded the contract to provide environmental permitting services for the Alaska Natural Gas Development Authority's proposed Glennallen-Palmer Spur Gas Pipeline. The spur pipeline would provide Southcentral Alaska with a long-term natural gas supply by connecting with the Development Authority's proposed gas pipeline. The pipeline would transport North Slope gas via a Prince William Sound port facility. Anchorage-based ASRC Energy Services Lynx Enterprises provides environmental permitting and planning services to resource developers, utilities, government regulators and other clients.

Leadership Anchorage lauded as "benchmark program"

Leadership Anchorage was designated a "benchmark program" by an evaluation of community leadership training programs across the United States. The evaluation was conducted by the Community Leadership Association in conjunction with The Leadership Lab at the University of Minnesota and the Center for the Study of the Individual and Society. Leadership Anchorage was one of five programs to excel in each of the evaluation's success factors, including participants' leadership skills and confidence, knowledge of the community and motivation to lead. Leadership Anchorage is a community leadership program run by the Alaska Humanities Forum.

Unemployment tax refund program

Some Alaska workers may be eligible for unemployment tax refunds if they worked for more than one employer last year. Alaska is one of only three states where both the employer and the worker contribute to the fund from which unemployment benefits are paid. State statutes provide for a refund to any worker who contributes in excess of $135.50, the per-employee annual contribution maximum. Forms to apply for a refund are available from the Employment Security Tax Office in Juneau at (907) 465-2757, toll free at (888) 448-3527 or by a mailed request to: Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, Employment Security Tax Office, P.O. Box 25509, Juneau, AK 99802-5509. Refund form requests may also be e-mailed to esd_tax@labor.state.ak.us or downloaded from the department's Web site at www.labor.state.ak.us/estax/for-us/toc_forms.htm. Requests for refunds must be made by Dec. 31.

Wells Fargo Home Mortgage supports concert association

Wells Fargo Home Mortgage has donated $300 to the Anchorage Concert Association through the Wells Fargo Sharing Advantage program. The Sharing Advantage program, launched by Wells Fargo in 1998, allows its customers to direct Wells Fargo Home Mortgage to make a $300 contribution on their behalf to a faith-based or nonprofit organization of choice following a mortgage loan closing. The contribution is paid for by Wells Fargo Home Mortgage and distributed directly to the designated church or charity. Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, based in Des Moines, Iowa, serves about 5 million customers in all 50 states through its retail and wholesale lending operations.

Donate to disaster fund

Snow City Cafe and PangoMedia have developed a Web site, www.alaskatoasia.pangomedia.com, to raise money for the Alaska to Asia Disaster Relief fund through the American Red Cross of Alaska. The Web site lists donated items that can be purchased online, with all of the proceeds going to the disaster relief fund. To donate an item, e-mail alaskatoasia@pangomedia.com with a description and value of item.
