ON THE MOVE
The design firm of Ralph Appelbaum Associates, based in New York City and London, England, was chosen by the Anchorage Museum of History and Art Building Committee as a consulting firm in the upcoming expansion. The firm's past work includes consulting on the design of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tenn., the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, N.Y. and the William J. Clinton Presidential Library and Archives in Little Rock, Ark. The firm will consult with David Chipperfield Associates of London, England, which is the architectural firm already hired for the expansion design. All outside contracts are being administered via Anchorage-based Kumin Associates. The museum is being expanded to accommodate Alaska Native Collections recently received from the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History and the National Museum of the American Indian as well as a move of the Imaginarium Science Discovery from its current downtown location. Northrim BanCorp Inc. announced at 95 cents per share dividend for shareholders to be paid on Feb. 6, 2004. This represents the banking institution's 36th consecutive quarterly cash dividend. Since 1995, Northrim has paid more than $8.4 million in quarterly cash dividends. Northrim BanCorp is the parent company of Northrim Bank, a full-service commercial bank providing a full range of personal and business banking services.
The Kotzebue Electric Assocation qualified for two loans totaling $4 million from the United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development for rural electrical projects. The two loans will be used for building new distribution lines and add generation capacity plus provide funding for headquarters facilities, a power plant and fuel system upgrades. Several Alaska companies were recognized for outstanding on-the-job safety records and health programs for their employees. The Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program within the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development and administered by Alaska Occupational Safety and Health personnel within the state Division of Labor Standards and Safety recognized Spruce Auto Body of Anchorage, the City of Kenai Wastewater Treatment Plant and Alaskan Physical Therapy of Soldotna. Each earned a two-year performance award. Chaz LTD Auto Body of Anchorage and the Dr. Lonnie Anderson Dental Office in Juneau both received a one-year award. BP Exploration Alaska, based in Anchorage, received a Voluntary Protection Program Star award for its safety record at its central power station at Prudhoe Bay.

The Bureau of Land Management has released its Alpine Satellite Development Plan Draft Environmental Impact Statement, for public review until March 1, 2004. The report analyzes a ConocoPhilips Alaska proposal for five new production well pads near the Colville River as well as associated transportation systems. Paper and CD copies of the impact statement are available at the BLM Alaska offices at 222 W. 7th Ave., in Anchorage, and at the BLM Northern Field Office at 1150 University Ave., in Fairbanks. GATHERINGS
The upcoming Pacific Rim Construction Oil Mining Expo and Conference 2004 at the Sullivan Arena set for Feb. 18-19, will feature a presentation by Dennis MacKay, a provincial legislator from British Columbia, Canada. He will address the potential economic benefits of a proposed transportation link between Southeast Alaska and the North American Highway system in Northwest British Columbia. Currently the state Department of Transportation has teamed up with the Western Lands Division of the Federal Highway Administration for a study of the benefits of a road and utility corridor linking the two geographic areas and potentially bringing additional sustainable year-round resource industry jobs to the remote sections of Northwest British Columbia. The McDowell Group of Anchorage has partnered with McElhanney and Associates, a Canadian engineering firm with several offices throughout British Columbia, to conduct an economic study of the proposed Bradfield Road, which includes several tunnels.
