Pacific Tower Properties Inc. and H & R Management Inc. have announced the merger of the two commercial real estate brokerage, management and leasing companies. The new company, Pacific Tower Properties Inc., will continue managing and marketing more than 2.5 million square feet of commercial real estate throughout Alaska, including properties in Anchorage, Juneau, Ketchikan and Fairbanks. Five Alaska high school students will have the opportunity to join a team of leading researchers, teachers and students on an international science expedition coming to Alaska Jan. 28-Feb. 8. Through the JASON Project, a scientific distance-learning program, the students will work with explorer and scientist Dr. Robert Ballard and a group of researchers from around the world to study active scientific research in Alaska. The project can be viewed via the Internet and telecasts provided by General Communication Inc. The students are: Drew Allison, Wasilla; Patricia Brown, Hoonah; Ben Dallin, McGrath; Joanne Pelletier, Palmer; and Selina Tolson, Hydaburg.

Wells Fargo Bank Alaska has awarded $10,000 scholarships to four Anchorage students. Recipients are Scott Johnson, West High School; Monica Smith and Amanda Hagan, both from East High School; and Matthew Hunt from Dimond High School. All four students graduated from high school in May and have completed the Wells Fargo Bank Alaska "Bank On U Program" designed to offer students on-the-job-training in banking.

The University of Alaska Foundation has announced the availability of privately funded scholarships for students attending any UA campus during the 2002-2003 academic year. The foundation has approximately 50 scholarships available ranging from $500 to $8,000. Requirements vary depending on class standing, grade point average, major and hometown/high school location. Applications are being accepted for the 11th Annual Alaska Native Youth Media Institute. Created by the Koahnic Broadcast Corp.'s Training Center, the program held in Anchorage June 9-17, gives Native high school-age students a hands-on introduction to media to encourage them to explore additional training and career development in the broadcast field. The summer Rural Alaska Honors Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is looking for high school juniors and seniors interested in a challenging college head start. The six-week institute helps students sharpen academic skills and develop the means to successfully cope with college life. Students will live on the UAF campus from May 25-July 6 and register for eight or nine university credits. Travel, tuition, room and board, books and supplies are awarded to those selected to attend. The Alaska Forest Association has announced the availability of the 2002 AFA Associate Member Scholarship applications. Eligibility requirements include being a student of a parent employed by an AFA associate member company or being employed by an associate member company. The deadline is April 5. The Anchorage Symphony Orchestra is continuing its 56th concert season at 8 p.m. Jan. 26 at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts Atwood Concert Hall. Randall Craig Fleischer is the conductor. Guitarist Angel Romero is the guest artist.
