On the Move

The Chugach Electric Board approved two South Anchorage projects aimed at ensuring adequate power supply and to increase reliability in that area. The first is a new bulk substation expected to cost between $11 and $14 million. The second is a new transmission line linking the International Station to the new South Anchorage substation. It is estimated to cost between $4 and $5 million. Construction is expected to begin sometime this year. Chugach is the largest electric utility in Alaska.

Alaska Modular Space Inc. received several awards at the recent Associated General Contractors of Alaska conference. AMSI earned an "Excellence in Construction" award for modular classroom construction in Kotzebue and Kivalina and an "Excellence in Safety" award for having zero lost time accidents in its six years of operation. Pete Stone, general manager, received the association's Hard Hat Award. ASMI is a full-service distributor of mobile offices, storage containers and modular buildings throughout Alaska.

/B> Anchorage is the site for the Winter Cities 2004 Conference to be held Feb. 18-22, 2004. Representatives from various cities in the United States, Russia, China, Japan, northern Europe and Canada will exchange idea on improving the quality of life in northern climates. The conference has three parts: a sustainable economic summit, a world-wide mayor's conference and promotion of cultural and sporting events. The conference will be held at the Egan Convention Center and is expected to bring $500,000 in delegate spending to the Anchorage area.

The ATHENA Society, a program of the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, seeks nominations for new society members. The ATHENA Society works to encourage women's potential as leaders of the business community. Nominations can be made through Feb. 13, 2004. Selections are made based on business accomplishments, community service and dedication to promoting women in business.
