Johnson

James Johnson has been promoted to vice president for Faculty and Staff Relations at the University of Alaska. He has been a member of the University staff since 1996, most recently served as chief of staff to president Mark Hamilton. Johnson received his bachelor's degree in politics from the University of California, Santa Cruz and his master's in political science from the University of Chicago. He completed postgraduate studies in industrial relations at the University of Minnesota and is working on a Ph.D. in higher education policy at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Riendl

Robin W. Riendl has been appointed as a financial consultant at the Anchorage branch office of Smith Barney. Riendl will provide complete financial planning and investment services- focusing on retirement and estate planning, managed money, private investments, and portfolio management- to investors and business owners. Riendl previously worked as a financial consultant for Morgan Stanley Dean Witter. She holds a Masters Degree in Business from the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Governor Frank H. Murkowski made the following appointments: Nancy Dahlstrom will take over House District 18, a seat left vacant when Murkowski appointed then-Rep. Lisa Murkowski to the U.S. Senate. Dahlstrom came in a close-second to Murkowski during the primary for the seat. Her district covers parts of Eagle River, Muldoon, Government Hill, Elmendorf Air Force Base and Fort Richardson. She will be sworn in when the legislature convenes Jan. 21.

Twenty-nine year old Tara Sweeney is a special assistant in the governor's office for rural issues. Prior to her appointment, she worked with: Arctic Slope Regional Corporation in Anchorage in various positions over six years; the North Slope Borough as a project administrator; and VanNess Feldman law firm in Washington, DC where she lobbied to open ANWR. Sweeney will serve as liaison between the governor's office and rural organizations. She received a BS from Cornell University in 1996.

Former Elmendorf base commander Sam Johnson is now assistant commissioner for Homeland Security within the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. As such, he will serve as a liaison between the state and the federal Department of Homeland Security, the White House and other departments of state government. Johnson had a 26-year military career and held positions including: Base commander at Elmendorf Air Force Base, commander of the 611th Air Support Group, and as a consultant with the Alaska Command from 1999-2000. He has a BS in business from the Military College of South Carolina and a MS in business from the University of Northern Colorado.

Anchorage Mayor George Wuerch has appointed the following people to his administration: Denis LeBlanc will serve as the new director of the Office of Management and Budget. LeBlanc has worked for more than 20 years in financial management, most recently as the vice president of Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. LeBlanc has an MBA from the University of Oklahoma and a BA from the University of Massachusetts.

Former Municipal Light and Power General Manager Mike Scott is the new executive director of city public works. In the last 18 years, Scott, has served as municipal manager in Kotzebue, Alaska; Silverton, Ore.; and the Matanuska-Susitna Borough. He holds a BA from the University of Washington and an MBA from Harvard.

Jim Posey, the former commissioner of the Alaska Public Utilities Commission, took over management of ML&P. Posey worked for ARCO for nearly 20 years. He has a BA from Wichita State University and a JD from the University of Kansas.

John Rodda is the new director of Cultural and Recreational Services. Rodda has managed recreational facilities, including Ben Boeke Ice Arenas, Sullivan Arena and the McDonald Memorial Center, in the municipality since 1975.

Tom Wilson is the new director of public transportation. Wilson was the former executive director of Commonwealth North and a Colonel in the U.S. Army. He holds a BS from the United States Military Academy and an MS from Georgia Institute of Technology.

Robert Hall, the former acting director of Solid Waste Services, is officially the new director of that division. Hall has a long history as a project manager for a variety of state projects. He has a BS from the University of Missouri.

The Alaska Commercial Fishing and Agriculture Bank has appointed Lela F. "Lea" Klingert as their new president and chief executive. Klingert has a more-than 16-year history with the company, and has worked for the past decade as its Senior Vice President. She serves the Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation as a director-treasurer and is a member of the Finance Subcommittee of the Joint Legislative Salmon Industry Task Force.
