Princess expands lodges in Denali area

By the Journal Staff

Princess Cruises is expanding both of its Denali National Park area lodges. Construction is already under way on the $26 million improvement project.

The Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge, located near the park entrance, will feature a 16,000-square foot main lodge building with a great room. A two-story stone fireplace, as well as Alaska art, will serve to maintain the wilderness lodge motif. Vaulted ceilings and 30-foot windows will offer views of the park.

The lobby will have open space with seating areas where guests can relax. The new lobby will also host an espresso bar.

The lodge expansion also includes 80 new rooms and additional seating in the restaurant.

Another feature planned in the project is a walking village that will host five new shops with Alaska souvenirs.

Landscaping additions include walking paths, more that 500 trees and 50 flower boxes.

The Mount McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge expansion will include 96 new rooms, bringing the total to 334. This is the second room addition since the hotel opened in 1997 on the banks of the Chulitna River, south of the national park.

The McKinley lodge will also include a new dining option. Expedition Pizza will feature casual dining with indoor and outdoor seating.
