ON THE MOVE

The Alyeska Resort in Girdwood recently completed $200,000 in guest room renovations. All summit floor and premium rooms were upgraded and the hotel added a business center to its amenities. "It is refreshing to start a new year with a new look," said Chris von Imhof, chief executive officer of the Alyeska Resort. Guest rooms now offer what is called the Paradise Bed, featuring feather pillows and a down mattress top. The new business center is on the second floor and offers two PC workstations with high speed Internet access, a laptop station, three laser jet printers, copier, facsimile machine and 24-hour technical support. Alyeska Resort is located 40 miles south of Anchorage is the state's only four-diamond hotel and offers 307 guest rooms.

A $13 million remodel of the Fred Meyer store on Northern Lights is now complete. "We've improved every inch to give customers a great new look and feel," said Nancy Carey, store director. No new square footage was added in the design; however, space was freed up in the main building by moving seasonal gardening sales to an outdoor parking lot. The new garden location covers nearly 8,400 square feet and includes a greenhouse and a sun shade structure. The bed, bath and housewares sections were moved to the southeast corner of the store and the furniture section was expanded to nearly double its size. Home electronics moved to the front of the store. Fred Meyer is one of the nation's largest food retailers with stores in 32 states.

The M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust is contributing $200,000 for a behavioral health center at Fairbanks Community Mental Health. The Murdock grant is contingent upon matching local funds. The new facility is estimated to cost $7 million. FCMH is a non-profit organization operating for more than 25 years in the Interior. It is the only comprehensive mental health provider in the area. Construction on the new facility is expected to begin spring 2004.
