Firm seeks Cordova oil permit

By The Associated Press

CORDOVA -- Cassandra Energy Corp. has applied for permits to conduct oil exploration on the Copper River Delta.

The company applied for a permit Dec. 10 for permission to use low-frequency electromagnetic waves to scope out oil prospects.

"We do not expect there to be significant resource effects associated with the ... process," said Bob Behrends of the Cordova Ranger District.

The permit would allow helicopter access to 38 sites.

A second permit application submitted Dec. 18 seeks permission to drill in the Katalla area, about 55 miles southeast of Cordova.

The lands under consideration for drilling are the property of Chugach Alaska Corp. Chugach Alaska has until Dec. 31, 2004, to locate hydrocarbons on its 10,000 acres, or the mineral rights will revert to the federal government.

If Chugach Alaska finds oil or gas, it may get access to more than 55,000 additional acres known as the Katalla Exchange Area adjacent to the Chugach Alaska lands on the north and west. Chugach Alaska also has right of first refusal on any oil and gas leases made available by the federal government in the Katalla Exchange Area.
