Young lawyers celebrate the holidays with Covenant House youth

By Michelle Meshke

On December 5, 2003, the Young Lawyers Division of the Anchorage Bar Association held its annual holiday party for the youth of Covenant House.

In the largest showing of support for homeless youth yet, young lawyers turned out in droves to support Covenant House residents. The party lasted well into the evening as lawyers and the youth at Covenant House and staff participated in a variety of holiday events. Participants painted ornaments, decorated a Christmas tree, and waited patiently for Santa Claus to deliver presents to the kids, some of who posed for photos.

The Young Lawyers entertained the youth with a lively game of movie trivia Jeopardy that had the kids debating over the various Kingdoms of Middle Earth from the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. The kids also participated in an original poem contest and shared their creations with the group.

One of the highlights of this annual event is the Owhite elephantsO gift exchange sponsored by the Young Lawyers. The kids opened gifts and swapped and switched the gifts through the lively exchange. The Young Lawyers also purchased a $250 movie theatre gift certificate to allow all the residents to attend a movie on Christmas Day.

Through the generous donations of Birch, Horton, Bittner and Cherot and Sonosky, Chambers, Sachse, Miller & Munson, as well as many individual young lawyers, the residents of Covenant House will have presents to open Christmas morning as well. The kids will be enjoying new sweaters, hats, and socks courtesy of these donations.

In addition, the Young Lawyers Division assisted with the annual professional clothing drive for Covenant House. This year, there was widespread participation by the legal community, with 36 law firms participating. This serves as the primary source of dress wear for the youth at the house.

The clothing helps the youth learn to dress properly for job interviews and instills confidence when they know they present a pulled-together appearance. The Young Lawyers thank all of those firms, attorneys, and their staff who donated generously to this effort.
