Cheryl Sutton of Ninilchik and Gerry Merrigan of Petersburg were elected as at-large representatives to the board of United Fishermen of Alaska, joining incumbent at-large directors Bruce Wallace of Juneau and Bruce Schactler of Kodiak, who were re-elected to two-year terms. Elections were held in May. Bob Thorstenson Jr., representing Southeast Alaska Seiners, was elected as marketing chairman, and Paul Shadura of Kenai, representing the Kenai Peninsula Fishermen's Association, as membership chairman. Committee chairs were elected by the full UFA board at its March meeting, and serve one-year terms. Also re-elected to continue volunteer service were Joe Childers, UFA president; Chip Treinen, vice president; and Rich Davis, secretary. UFA is the largest statewide commercial fishing trade association, representing 37 commercial fishing groups.

Former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Daniel S. Sullivan has been appointed as Alaska's attorney general. Sullivan has held judicial clerkships on both the highest state and highest federal courts in Alaska. He served as a judicial law clerk for Chief Justice Warren Matthews of the Alaska Supreme Court in Anchorage and for Judge Andrew Kleinfeld of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in Fairbanks. He also served briefly as an appellate court staff attorney for the Alaska Court of Appeals, which focuses on criminal cases. After the clerkships, Sullivan practiced corporate law and commercial litigation in Anchorage with Perkins, Coie LLP. Sullivan left private practice to serve as a director on the National Security Council and National Economic Council of the White House. Sullivan became assistant secretary of state for economic, energy and business affairs, where he served as a senior advisor to top U.S. government officials regarding economic, energy, trade, finance, transportation, telecommunications and Arctic policies. A Marine veteran, he is currently a member of the Marine Corps' Individual Ready Reserve, and has been a member of the Alaska Bar Association.

Stan Halfacre, principal and contract task order manager for GeoNorth LLC in Anchorage, has earned the Project Management Institute's achievement of project management professional. The institute is a membership association for the project management profession. GeoNorth, which has a second office location in Portland, Ore., is an information technology solutions provider specializing in geographic information systems, Web design and development, and database management technologies.

Heather Heineken of Fairbanks has been named great north director of the Alaska Small Business Development Center. She is an owner of several family-owned businesses, and has certifications as a QuickBooks advisor, NX level instructor, profit mastery instructor and as a sleeter consultant. She is an alumnus of the University of Alaska Fairbanks and is currently pursuing a master's degree through the University of Alaska Southeast. Karen Tilton now heads the Fairbanks office of R&M Consultants, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary. She fills the position left by the retirement of Rick Bennett. Tilton joined R&M in January as a senior land surveyor. She is a former title and plans supervisor and right of way engineer with the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Utilities. Tilton is a graduate of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, a professional land surveyor registered in Alaska, a certified federal surveyor and has achieved the senior right of way agent designation through the International Right of Way Association. R&M, founded by Ralph Migliaccio and Jim Rooney, did the initial route geotechnical studies in 1969 for the trans-Alaska oil pipeline.

Mayor-elect Dan Sullivan has named three executives to his new administration. Cheryl Frasca, former director of the Alaska Office of Management and Budget under Gov. Frank Murkowski and former city budget director, will assume the responsibility of the city's new director of the Office of Management and Budget, while Nancy Usera, former commissioner of Labor and Commissioner of Administration for the state of Alaska, will be Sullivan's new director of labor relations. Heading up the Office of Economic and Community Development will be Greg Jones, Cook Inlet Region Inc.'s vice president for real estate development. They will assume their posts after Sullivan takes the oath of office July 1.

Wells Fargo has appointed six new Anchorage store managers: Rollin Hansen, Lara Shogren, Hemant Sisodia, Cheryl Vonada, Tamara Graham and Ryan Wagner. Hansen is manager for the Frontier store in East Anchorage. He joined Wells Fargo in January 2008 as a personal banker in Juneau. He has five years of financial services experience. Hansen is a U.S. Navy veteran who served eight years as a firefighter. Shogren is store manager for Wells Fargo's Sears Mall location. An eight-year Wells Fargo veteran, she has served as a teller, personal banker and store manager. She earned a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Alaska Anchorage. Sisodia is the Fifth Avenue store manager. Most recently, Sisodia was the Frontier store manager. Sisodia joined Wells Fargo in April 2007 as a teller and later graduated from Wells Fargo's personal banker forward hire training program. He holds bachelor's degrees in business administration from University of London and Gujarat University in India. Vonada is manager for the Northern Lights and C Street store. Vonada is a 22-year Wells Fargo veteran who was Sears Mall store manager for the past four years. Graham also has been named Northern Lights and C Street store manager, reporting to Vonada. Graham has been with Wells Fargo for eight years. Most recently, she served as a sales development consultant supporting Anchorage and Mat-Su Valley team members. Earlier, she was a personal banker in Anchorage and Portland, Ore. Wagner is manager for the Benson store in Midtown. Since joining Wells Fargo in 2003, he has been a teller in Oregon, and personal banker and store manager in Anchorage. He earned a bachelor's degree in business finance from Western Baptist College in Salem.

The city and borough of Wrangell on June 9 recognized Mark Walker, executive director of Alaska Island Community Services, for his efforts to improve health and healthcare services in Wrangell and the surrounding area. Walker first came to Wrangell in 1978 working for Ketchikan Gateway Mental Health as a counselor for Wrangell, Petersburg and Kake. In 1989, Mark started a nonprofit organization, which eventually became known as AICS with only two employees. Since that time, AICS has grown to employ over 115 people, making AICS the largest employer in Wrangell. AICS services have grown to more than 10 different departments, including primary medical care, dental care, mental health, senior services, disability services, wilderness therapy and educational programs, pharmacy services, access to public assistance, and disease prevention and education.

Arctic Information Technology has hired Aimee Agnew and Clayton Brooks, and promoted Jennifer Prowell. Agnew will serve as the new marketing manager and communication efforts. She holds a bachelor's degree in public relations from the University of Texas at Dallas and has worked in the marketing field for more than seven years. Brooks was hired as the senior network infrastructure consultant. Brooks recently held the position as the NI systems engineer for the U.S. Air Force while serving at Ramstein Air Base in Germany. He has more than 20 years of experience. Prowell was promoted to sales and service coordinator for the network infrastructure consultant team. She recently served as Arctic ITs network consultant and is a Microsoft Certified Technical Specialist. Her duties will now include managing and coordinating NI scheduling and help desk administration. She attended Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass., where she studied computer science. She served as a military police officer for five years and has more than 12 years experience as a network coordinator within the IT industry. Arctic IT provides business solutions, network infrastructure systems, consulting, managed services, technical support and training classes for businesses throughout Alaska and the Pacific Northwest.

Gov. Sarah Palin appointed Ramona Reeves and reappointed Margaret Volz to the Alaska Children's Trust Board, which seeks to prevent child abuse and neglect in the state. Reeves, of Fairbanks, owns and manages the Fairbanks Gold Co., a land development and landscaping firm. Reeves is active in Interior community sports. Reeves holds a bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Reeves was appointed to a public seat. Volz, of Wasilla, is a nurse and pediatric nurse practitioner working at Alaska CARES, an abuse victims' clinic. She has worked at The Children's Place in Wasilla; at Matanuska Health Care Associates and as a school nurse for the Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District. She was named the Alaska Nurse Practitioner of the Year in 2000. Volz earned a bachelor's degree in nursing from the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, Minn., and a master's degree in nursing from the University of Washington. Volz has served on the board since 2007 and was reappointed to a public seat.

Gov. Sarah Palin appointed Seth Church and Patrick Owen to the Marine Transportation Advisory Board, which advises the state on issues related to the Alaska Marine Highway System. Church, of Fairbanks, is vice president of C Co., a general contracting firm. He also provides equipment and housing on the North Slope in partnership with Native-owned businesses, and is a partner in a Fairbanks housing ventures. As an intern in a U.S. Senate office, he researched Indian reservation road issues to help improve transportation links for Alaska Natives. Church graduated from Nenana's Cyberlynx correspondence high school. Church was appointed to an at-large seat on MTAB, and is one of two members residing in a community not directly served by the state ferry system. Owen, of Juneau, is a retired able-bodied seaman, who served 13 years with the Alaska Marine Highway System. He worked as a marine engineer and tugboat crewman in Seattle shipyards and as an engine crewman on federal research ships in Southeast Alaska and Hawaii in the 1960s, and has worked on Alaska's ferries. He had served as Petersburg terminal operator and on nearly every one of the state ferry boats, and was a member of the Masters, Mates and Pilots union. Owen was appointed to a seat reserved for a current or retired ferry employee and member of a union representing ferry workers.

Gov. Sarah Palin appointed Gregory Gursey to the Municipal Bond Bank Authority board of directors. The authority is a public corporation, established in state law to help local governments finance capital projects. Gursey, of Anchorage, is co-owner of Benefits Broker, an Anchorage retirement and investment management firm. He previously was vice president of investments for Wedbush Morgan Securities in Anchorage. Gursey received an associate's degree in business, and a bachelor's degree in finance, both from the University of Alaska Anchorage. Gursey was appointed to a public seat on the Bond Bank board.

Gov. Sarah Palin appointed Dr. Darin M. Bell to the State Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Board, which serves as the state's licensing board for physical and occupational therapists. Bell, of Seward, is a family practice physician at Providence Seward Medical and Care Center. He holds bachelor's degrees in biology and psychology from Texas Tech University, and received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. He served a family medicine residency at the Alaska Family Medicine Residency program. Bell is a member of the Alaska and national chapters of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Bell was appointed to a physician's seat on the board.
