The 2013 recipients of the First Lady’s Volunteer of the Year Awards were chosen by an executive committee of Alaskan community members. They are: Earline Smith, Juneau: For more than two decades, volunteer and mentor Smith, 92, has given countless hours to the youth at the Johnson Youth Center in Juneau. Steve Fishback, Anchorage: Fishback makes volunteer contributions to the design and construction of Camp Fire Alaska campsite facilities, and through his leadership of volunteer work crews to keep these construction projects on schedule. Patricia Myers, Fairbanks: Myers is an informal “auntie” for youth who are pursuing a second chance at the Fairbanks Youth Facility. She visits the detention center weekly, where she mentors and leads students toward transformation and personal development. William Gaines, Anchorage: Gaines is known to his students and football players in the Anchorage area as “Coach Wiz.” He devotes countless hours to the Alaska South Central Pop Warner Football and Cheerleading program, which he helped launch, as well as the Boys and Girls Club, where he also coaches. Dr. Robyn Rehmann, Anchorage: Rehmann is recognized not only for being a long-time educator in the Anchorage School District, but for her decades of volunteerism, helping women in need, the homeless, and those with disabilities or special needs throughout the community. Richard Groff, Cordova: Serving for more than 40 years as a volunteer firefighter in the communities of Ketchikan and Cordova, Groff makes public safety and disaster response his core mission. Terrence T. Jason Shanigan, Anchorage: As an Alaska State Trooper, Shanigan embodies the Trooper motto: “Loyalty, Integrity, Courage.” This Aleut leader instills positive values in those whose lives he touches. He is known for his dog-mushing trips to rural communities to address the issues of suicide, sexual assault, and substance abuse. The volunteers will be recognized at a luncheon and ceremony on May 10. Tania Smallenberg, immunization nurse coordinator with the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium Immunization Program, was named the 2013 Alaska Childhood Immunization Champion in recognition of her outstanding efforts to promote childhood immunization throughout Alaska. Smallenberg is recognized for her work building and refining the structure of the ANTHC Immunization Coordinators Program. Her collaboration with Alaska Public Health Nursing, rural and urban immunization providers, and health care policy makers, combined with her appreciation of and attention to Alaska’s diverse cultural identities, have improved access to vaccination across the state. Paul Dillahay has been named president and CEO of Arctic Slope Regional Corp. Federal. Dillahay is a seasoned executive with a proven track record of driving growth and organizational success. Dillahay previously served as ASRC Federal’s chief operating officer and had principal responsibility for day-to-day operations of ASRC Federal subsidiaries and the company’s Shared Services Center. Prior to joining ASRC Federal in 2011, Dillahay was president and COO of USIS. He previously spent seven years in finance and operations at Lockheed Martin, where he led a broad business line providing support to the defense and intelligence community. Dillahay succeeds Ken Asbury, who left ASRC Federal to pursue other interests. Ben W. Colson has been named the 2013 BP Teacher of the Year for the Anchorage School District. The honor as BP Teacher of the Year was announced at the celebration at the Alaska Native Heritage Center. Colson teaches social studies at SAVE High School. For the past decade he has taken students to Washington, D.C., with the Close Up program, a trip that for many will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see our nation’s capital and government at work. By promoting student involvement in community service efforts he helps build a sense of pride in his students as they integrate themselves into the community where they will become productive members. Tom Mayer is the new director of the Division of General Services for the Alaska Department of Administration and Jason Soza is the new chief procurement officer for the division. Both began their new roles May. 1. Mayer has worked in procurement for the State since 2002. Mayer managed the Central Purchasing Program and Procurement Officer Certification Training Program, supervised the contracting officer group, facilitated division outreach programs to other State departments and conducted numerous high-level, multi-agency procurements. Soza developed and implemented the Task Order Procurement System, co-led a rural outreach program to educate rural Alaskans on the benefits of statewide contracts which won a national award, played an instrumental role in procurement reform legislation, and contributed to soliciting and awarding some of the most complex and highly visible contracts for the State of Alaska. Full-service ad agency Bradley Reid + Associates announced the promotions of Jason Smith and Jontue Hollingsworth and the hiring of Janice Wright as an account supervisor. Smith has been named creative director of Bradley Reid. Smith has been with the agency since 2006 as an art director, creating print ads, branding campaigns and marketing materials for many of the agency’s clients, including ConocoPhillips Alaska, the Pebble Partnership, the Alaska Permanent Fund, CIRI Alaska Tourism Corp.  and Alaska Public Media. He received a BFA degree in design from Utah State University at Logan. Hollingsworth will become associate creative director. Hollingsworth joined Bradley Reid as an Art Director and has been a key designer for the firm. His work includes designing a new logo for the Alaska Marine Highway; design of this year’s Arctic Slope Regional Corp. annual report; and art direction for photo and video shoots. He is a graduate of the Visual Communication and Design program at the University of Nebraska. Wright will oversee advertising and public relations projects and serve as a link between clients and Bradley Reid’s staff of creative professionals. Wright brings more than 25 years of media sales to her new job. She spent nearly 15 years at KTVA Channel 11 as an outside sales person, followed by 10 years at GCI developing marketing strategies and branding on 54 channels in 18 markets statewide.

Amber Frizzell has joined Alaska Permanent Capital Management, or APCM, as client relations manager. Frizzell holds bachelors’ of business management and international business from Whitworth University. She brings eight years of community and customer relationship building experience from her work with non-profits and Tribal governments. APCM is a locally-owned and operated investment manager in Alaska, with nearly $3 billion in assets under management and advisement. Local business leaders are working with the March of Dimes to prevent preterm birth and give more babies a healthy start in life.  GCI’s Martin Cary, vice president and general manager of managed broadband services and Marina Cottini, vice president, commercial sales and marketing for GCI are co-chairs for the Signature Chefs Auction. The auction features 12 Anchorage chefs including lead chef Jens Nannestad, owner of Southside Bistro. Claire Marie has joined Bald Mountain Air Service, or BMAS, as director of safety. She advises management on all aviation safety and security, and also represents BMAS at industry aviation safety or security committees and during regulatory safety meetings with the Aviation Safety Council of Alaska, Federal Aviation Administration and others. Marie is a life-long Alaskan. Her past work experience includes serving as a liaison officer and chief of the Joint Operations Center/Interagency Coordinator at the Department of Defense-U.S. Air Force at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, or JBER. She also has worked for the state’s Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, as a transportation security specialist for TSA and as a DOD contractor. Marie received her master’s degree in security studies in 2010 from Naval Postgraduate School. She also has a bachelor’s degree in management studies from the University of Maryland, and has completed other safety-related and training courses. James Fields of Glennallen has been sworn in as a member of the State Board of Education & Early Development. Fields will serve a five-year term in a seat reserved for the regional educational attendance areas, which are the school districts in the unorganized borough. Fields owns The Hub of Alaska and Homestead Supply as well as other buildings in the Glennallen area, and serves as the head high school boys basketball coach and president of the Copper River School Board. He and his family enjoy being foster parents.

Heather Savery has joined Homer, Alaska-based Maritime Helicopters, Inc. as the organization’s accounting manager. Her background includes almost 15 years of accounting experience working for public accounting, not-for-profit, government defense contracting, and privately owned companies, most recently in the Washington, D.C. area. Gregory Galik is the new Board Chairman for the World Trade Center Alaska Board of Directors. Galik’s appointment follows the resignation and completion of term by past Board Chairman Rick Pollock. Galik is a veteran of the board, having originally joined the organization in 2001. His business, Alaska Brands Group, is an exporter of glacial water to markets in North America, Asia and Europe. Galik is a true Alaskan, who grew up on homesteads in McGrath and Fairbanks. He is a graduate of Alaska Pacific University, with a bachelor’s degree in business and marketing. He is a recent University of Alaska Alumni of the Year Award holder in entrepreneurship and business. The Department of Law announced that James Scott will replace Dave Brower as Juneau district attorney. Scott is currently an assistant district attorney in the Ketchikan District Attorney’s Office. He has worked for the department in that capacity since 1999. Prior to that, he worked in Illinois as a prosecutor and in private practice. Brower will retire from state service effective April 30. Brower has been with the Department of Law for nearly 22 years, working in both the criminal and civil divisions. He also worked for the state as an officer in the Department of Corrections. R&M CONSULTANTS, INC., or R&M, has added four staff members to its Anchorage office. John Daley, PE joined R&M in January 2013 as a senior project engineer in the Waterfront Engineering Group. Daley has 20 years of experience in project management, engineering design, construction, and inspection. He has managed and participated in a wide variety of civil and waterfront projects including roadways, water and wastewater pipelines, docks, harbors, and breakwaters, including Seward D Float Harbor, Homer Port System 5 Improvements and Kodiak Ferry Terminal and Dock Improvements. Daley holds a Master of Science in Civil Engineering (Coastal and Marine) and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Alaska Anchorage. He is a professional engineer registered in Alaska and Washington. Former R&M employee Marc Frutiger, PE moved back to Alaska and rejoined R&M as a project engineer in the Surface Transportation Group in February 2013, after working abroad for a few years. Marc has eight years of experience in civil engineering. He has worked on surface transportation and utility projects in Alaska, Wyoming, and Switzerland. Frutiger has a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. He is a professional civil engineer registered in Alaska and Wyoming. Abe Schmidt joined R&M in January 2013 as a geologist in the Earth Sciences Department. Schmidt’s previous experience includes geological, botanical, and ecological research, as well as mining operations inspections. Prior to joining R&M, he spent several summers as an intern for the Alaska Department of Natural Resources. At R&M, Schmidt has worked on the Bethel Youth Facility and DOT&PF Statewide Materials Site Inventory, Site Inspections and Geological Investigations. He holds a joint Bachelor of Science in Geosciences from University of Montana/University of College Cork. Janek Wierzbicki, PE joined R&M’s Surface Transportation Group as a project engineer in November 2012. Originally from Alaska, Wierzbicki recently returned to Anchorage from Toronto, Canada. He has more than nine years of experience in civil engineering. Wierzbicki holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the Virginia Military Institute and is currently working on his Master of Science in Civil Engineering. He is a professional civil engineer registered in Alaska and Utah.

Scott Bell has been promoted to traffic manager for Bradley Reid + Associates. Bell graduated from Dimond High School before pursuing artistic work in Portland. He returned to Alaska in 2012 and started with Bradley Reid as a graphic artist and assistant traffic manager. In his new role as traffic manager, he will help manage the workload of the art department while coordinating with various publications and broadcast stations. Northrim Bank has announced several staff changes. Ellen Izer was promoted to senior vice president human resources. She joined Northrim in fall 2011 as vice president human resources with approximately 20 years of experience with First National Bank Alaska. Jay Blury has been promoted to vice president, marketing and communications director. Born and raised in Fairbanks, he has worked in a growing marketing management capacity at Northrim Bank for seven years. Zachary Hays, a commercial fisheries lending expert, moved from the Wasilla Financial Center to become the vice president, small business and consumer loan manager. He has been with Northrim since May o2011 and has seventeen years of banking experience with National Bank of Alaska, Wells Fargo and Bank of America. Mhay Sy has become vice president, lending quality assurance officer. She joined Northrim Bank in 2007 as the first member of the Loan Quality Assurance Group and has since established the Builder Ranking report, Commercial Real Estate stress test and Large Borrowers report. Kelly McCormack has accepted the role of assistant vice president, commercial loan officer IV. A life-long Alaskan and third generation banker, he joined Northrim in 2005. Missie Yost and Todd Heverling, have been hired. Yost joined the bank as vice president of branch administration operations manager. She comes to Northrim with 28 years of banking experience at First National Bank Alaska, Key Bank, N.A. and Security Bank in Oregon. Heverling accepted a position as a small business loan officer. Born and raised in Anchorage, he has been in the banking industry since 1994 and comes to Northrim from First National Bank where he served as a business development officer for 16 years.

Rachel Lauesen has been named staff attorney at Ukpeagvik Iñupiat Corp. Lauesen earned her law degree at the University of Wisconsin Law School and has been admitted to the Alaska Bar Association, the Federal District Court for the District of Alaska, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Wes Harvey has been named corporate quality programs manager for UIC. Harvey has more than 20 years of experience in the field of environmental and quality management. Prior to joining UIC, Harvey worked for the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation and served as quality manager for Olgoonik Development LLC. He also obtained his bachelor’s degree in chemistry at the University of Kansas.   Longtime journalist Ed Bennett has joined Bradley Reid + Associates, Inc. as a copywriter/editor. He previously served as manager of assignments and web content at KTUU Channel 2 News. Besides television, Bennett’s career includes writing and editing for radio, weekly and daily newspapers, telecommunications and the web. His accomplishments include co-founding “Alaska Review,” Alaska’s first statewide television news magazine; organizing two dozen “Net Days” which wired Anchorage schools for the Internet, while working as senior communications specialist for what is now Alaska Communications. He has also been business editor for the Anchorage Times and managing editor for the Alaska Journal of Commerce. He holds a bachelor’s degree in communications and an MBA with an emphasis on telecommunications management, both from Alaska Pacific University.   Matt Olson of AMC Engineers has passed the NCEES Principles and Practice of Engineering exam. Olson is a graduate of St. Cloud State University with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. Since joining AMC Engineers in 2006, his work includes the preparation of heating and cooling load calculations, equipment selection, piping and duct system design, construction documents preparation, site investigations and evaluation of existing HVAC and plumbing systems, and construction contract administration support. He is currently working on the UAA Engineering and Industry Building, the UAF Engineering Building, the Dena’ina Wellness Center in Kenai, and the State of Alaska Library, Archives, and Museum project in Juneau.   Greg Johnson, Marc Dunne and Michael McElligott have joined Jack White Commercial after the firm Bond, Stephens, and Johnson dissolved. Johnson will replace former Jack White broker Gregg Gunnarson. Gunnarson has been with the company since 1984 and broker since 2001. He is shifting away from the day-to-day responsibilities but will continue to work for Jack White Commercial. Johnson has more than 26 years of commercial real estate experience in the Anchorage market, and 20 years as partner and owner of Bond, Stephens, and Johnson. Dunne, CCIM, associate broker, is a life-long Alaskan and has been a commercial real estate broker in Anchorage since 1994. He was the top-producing broker for Bond, Stephens and Johnson from 2005 to 2012. McElligott, MBA, associate broker, is also a life-long Alaskan and has been a licensed Realtor for 16 years. He specializes in commercial real estate sales, leasing, investment and analysis.   Northrim Bank has announced staff changes at the Fairbanks Financial Center. A 31-year resident of Fairbanks, Tammy Kosa has become vice president, regional sales and service manager. A graduate of Lathrop High School and UAF School of Management with a BBA in international business, she has 20 years of banking experience and holds both an Alaska Life/Health Insurance License and a Series 65 Investment License through Northrim Investment Services. Delores Siah brings more than 15 years of banking experience with Bank of America and Key Bank to her position as assistant vice president, branch sales manager. She spent the latter part of her time at Key Bank extensively travelling the state, visiting branches in Dutch Harbor, Juneau, Ketchikan and Kodiak. William “Bill” Staley joins Northrim Bank as vice president, commercial loan officer. He began his career in the financial services industry in 2000 with American Express in Phoenix, where he remained until 2005. He went on to become a commercial lender with Key Bank for two years and then Wells Fargo for six years, where he was also a senior relationship manager. A graduate of Lathrop High School and UAF, he also holds an MBA from the WP Carey School of Business at Arizona State University and an MSIM in IT from ASU. Jim Culley accepted a position as vice president, commercial loan officer. He grew up in Fairbanks, graduated from high school in St. Jacob, Ill., and returned to Fairbanks to attend UAF where he obtained his BBA in business finance with an emphasis on accounting and financial markets. He began his banking career in 1994 with National Bank of Alaska and transitioned to Wells Fargo as vice president, senior business relationship manager with their merger.   Lynne Burkwist has been promoted to account recovery manager in the Credit Union 1 Member Assistance Department. Burkwist has worked in the Alaska finance industry for several decades and has previous experience as a loan officer, branch manager, and in her current area of account recovery. Her duties will include ensuring courteous, professional service for Credit Union 1 members in need of account recovery assistance.   Rose Ann Zumstein has been hired as PET’s Veterinary Hospital administrator in Anchorage. She has 23 years of experience in health care operations and administration and began her job Jan. 7. For the past six years, Rose Ann has served as Administrator for Alaska Sleep Clinic’s four locations and worked with employees, doctors, and medical professionals in the Anchorage, Palmer, Fairbanks and Soldotna areas. Before being recruited to Alaska in 2006, she was supervisor for the Neuro-diagnostics and Sleep Disorders Center at the Northwest Medical Center in Springdale, Ark., for three years. Prior to that she was the director and clinical research coordinator for the Sleep Disorders Institute at St. Jude Medical Center, Fullerton, Calif., and Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center, Mission Viejo, Calif., for seven years.   Anna M. Johns has been hired as broker for CENTURY 21, Freedom Realty, with offices in Soldotna and Kenai. She owned and operated her company, Preferred Realty & Management, until joining Century 21 Freedom Realty on March 22. Her experience encompasses residential real estate, commercial real estate, land sales and property management. She will be the Broker in Charge of the Century 21 Freedom Realty operation and will be assisted by Fred Braun, who remains as associate broker in charge of the Century 21 Freedom Realty, Kenai office. Johns attended Parks School of Business, attended Kenai Peninsula College and has 36 years of property management experience.   Richard Rinehart Jr. has been selected to fill an open seat on the 13-member Sealaska board of directors. Rinehart fills a board term that will end at the Sealaska annual meeting in 2013. Clarence Jackson Sr. of Kake previously held the seat. After the passing of Jackson in January, Sealaska followed a process to fill the vacant seat that allowed for open submissions from shareholders. Rinehart has a master’s degree in business administration from Portland State University. He is a certified management accountant and financial manager. He worked at Sealaska as chief financial officer and corporate controller between 2003 and 2009. He currently serves as a managing member at Raven Potlatch Real Estate in Bellevue, Wash.   Malinda Chase has been hired as the new language revitalization program director for the Doyon Foundation. Chase lives in Fairbanks with her 17-year-old daughter, Deenaalee, however her home is Anvik, where she is an enrolled tribal member. Chase comes to the Foundation from the Association of Interior Native Educators, where she continues to serve as the volunteer executive director, working with the AINE board on educational initiatives that support Interior Alaska Native educators and students. Chase has a bachelor’s degree in American studies from Wellesley College in Massachusetts and a master’s degree in cross-cultural studies from the University of Alaska Fairbanks.   Leslie R. Need has joined the Anchorage office Landye Bennett Blumstein LLP as an associate attorney. Need will focus her practice on Alaska Native law, civil litigation, corporate law, and municipal law.  She previously worked as a law clerk for U.S. Magistrate Judge John D. Roberts, the Alaska Attorney General’s office and the Honorable Vanessa White of the Alaska Superior Court. Need received her bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University and her Juris Doctor from the University of Tulsa College of Law. Landye Benne

Dr. Paul Franke, M.D., has been appointed as chief medical officer for the Alaska Native Medical Center. Prior to joining ANMC, Franke held various hospital leadership roles. He served as the vice president of medical affairs at Wheaton Franciscan Health Care in Iowa where he was in charge of quality services, case management and the medical staff office, in addition to driving risk management initiatives. He also served as the chief medical officer at the Fremont-Rideout Health Group in California and director of the Hospitalist Program at the Great Falls Clinic in Montana. Franke became interested in medicine after receiving a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the University of Louisville. Franke completed graduate studies at the Emory University School of Public Health, followed by a medical degree at the Medical College of Georgia. He completed his residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and a Business of Health Care certificate program at Johns Hopkins University. Cameron “Cam” M. Leonard, most recently Senior Assistant Attorney General with the Alaska Department of Law, has joined the Anchorage office of Perkins Coie in the firm’s Environment, Energy & Resources practice group.  As Senior Assistant AG, Leonard was lead counsel for the State of Alaska in two cases before the U.S. Supreme Court: Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation v. EPA, a Clean Air Act dispute arising at the Red Dog Mine; and Coeur Alaska Inc. v. Southeast Alaska Conservation Council, a Clean Water Act case over the permitting of the Kensington Mine. Leonard earned his juris doctorate from Boalt Hall, University of California, Berkeley, School of Law, where he was Associate Editor of the Ecology Law Quarterly and where he won the American Jurisprudence Award, Administrative Law (1982) and the American Jurisprudence Award, Torts (1981).  He received his bachelor’s degree in history from Cornell University. In addition to his legal practice, Leonard served on the Alaska Legal Services Board of Directors and was Alaska’s civil law representative to, and past chair of, the Western States Hazardous Waste Project, an EPA-sponsored regional network of twelve western states and Canadian provinces. Colby J. Swenor has joined KeyBank in Alaska as a retail relationship manager at the South Anchorage branch. Swenor joined Key in 2011 and has more than seven years of financial industry knowledge and experience. He is a former branch manager for Wells Fargo Financial in the Anchorage area. An avid outdoorsman, Swenor has been a coach with the Northstar Hockey Association and the Laura Stamm Power Skating Clinics. He is also currently working on the planning committee for the Golf Tournament of Awesomeness that will be benefitting the AWAIC shelter this year. Charles Lean was reappointed and Kathleen Liska was appointed to the Citizens’ Advisory Commission on Federal Areas in Alaska. Lean, of Nome, has more than 30 years of experience as a fisheries biologist in Western Alaska. He currently works for the Norton Sound Economic Development Corp. as a director for the fisheries research and development program. He has received numerous awards including the U.S. National Park Service Star Award and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries Meritorious Service Award. He holds a bachelor’s degree in wildlife management from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Liska, of Anchorage, currently runs operations for Increase Alaska. She writes a bi-weekly newsletter, The Alaska Statesman, which informs the public of current topics that impact Alaska. Formerly, she has helped coordinate events for the Federation of Community Councils and for Wind Walkers International. Ronald Bressette, Gerry Hope, Joshua Howes and Daniel Kelly were reappointed to the Marine Transportation Advisory Board. Bressette, of Juneau, is currently an Alaska Branch Agent for the International Order of Masters, Mates & Pilots. Bressette is a United States Coast Guard Master and First Class Marine Pilot. He has worked on all levels of the Alaska Marine Highway System. Bressette holds a bachelor’s in resources management from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science & Forestry. Hope, of Sitka, is a transportation manager for the Sitka Tribe and past president of Sitka Camp, Alaska Native Brotherhood. He is a current member and past president of Sitka Tribal Council and the Sitka Chamber of Commerce. Howes, of Anchorage, is president of Premier Alaska Tours and formerly worked for Holland America. He is a member of the Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau, where he previously served as chair. He graduated magna cum laude with a master’s degree in global supply chain management from the University of Alaska Anchorage and holds a bachelor’s in international business from Alaska Pacific University. Kelly, of Ketchikan, is general manager for Alaska Marine Trucking. He is a current board member for SEAPRO and a former member of Ketchikan Gymnastics Club, Holy Name School and Girl Scouts of America. Andrew Craig was appointed to the Prince William Sound Oil Spill Recovery Institute Advisory Board. Craig, of Cordova, has been a commercial fisherman since 1999. He is also a member of Salvage Master for Alaska Marine Response LLC, specializing in pollution control and marine casualty response. He currently serves as a board member for Cordova District Fisherman United. Craig was a former field environment coordinator for a remote oil exploration project in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska. He holds a bachelor’s degree in natural resources-fisheries from Cornell University.

Aero Femme Non-Profit Organization & Scholarship Fund announced its first two scholarship recipients earlier this month at the Alaska Military Youth Academy graduation ceremony. Mrs. Alaska United America and Aero Femme founder Ariel Talen-Keller awarded the two $250 aviation scholarships to Alaska Military Youth Academy graduates Riley Kelderman and Rachel Brewer. The Alaska Military Youth Academy had received $500 from Aero Femme for two aviation scholarships in December 2012. These two scholarships were the first in a series of new aviation scholarships offered to academy graduates. Aero Femme was founded in 2010 to encourage and educate women of all ages to be involved in all types of aviation. Physician’s Assistant Clara Scott has joined the medical practice at Alaska Family Wellness Center. Scott, who holds a master’s degree in health science and graduated from the Physician Assistant Program at Duke University in 2001 with honors, is a certified Physician’s Assistant. She is originally from Olympia, Wash., and began her medical career as a paramedic. Alaska Family Wellness Center is a full-service integrative medical clinic offering a family practice scope of services including health and cancer screenings, bioidentical hormone therapy, pediatric acute illness and wellness care, blood pressure/heart disease/cholesterol management, prolotherapy, dermatological, allergy and fibromyalgia assessments and treatment, depression and mental health counseling, and pain management with alternative medicine applications. Richard Sorge, Property Manager and Broker Associate at Pacific Rim Properties has earned the Certified Property Manager designation from the Institute of Real Estate Management, an affiliate of the National Association of Realtors. Sandy Shoulders has also joined Pacific Rim Properties. Bringing experience from the upper Susitna Valley, Shoulders has moved her real estate business to Anchorage, joining the team at Pacific Rim Properties who specialize in sales, leasing, and property management. In addition to Anchorage, she will also be assisting clients in Eagle River and the Mat-Su Valley. Shaneill Marquez was just hired as a government mobility sales representative in the Business Integrated Solutions division at AT&T. She has more than four years of experience in telecom having worked as a retail sales consultant, finance representative, and most recently as an assistant store manager at AT&T’s Business Park Boulevard location. Liz Banicki of Eagle River has been chosen by Alaskan Congressman Don Young to represent Alaska as Cherry Blossom Princess during this year’s Cherry Blossom festival. In this role, Banicki, will represent Alaska at various festival events and participate in educational and networking activities. The princesses also attend a reception with members of Congress, participate in a panel discussion on professional careers and learn about leadership opportunities for women. She currently works as an intern in Young’s Washington, D.C., Office. Previous to her work for Young, she interned at the State Department and spent a year in Mainz, Germany, on a Fulbright Scholarship. She graduated from Chugiak High School in 2006 and the University of Portland in 2010 with a double degree in political science and German studies. In January, Joe Spink, Granite Construction Co. Alaska Region Manager, began his transition to the new role of Northwest Operating Group Business Development Manager. Granite’s Northwest Group includes Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, and Utah. Spink began his career with Wilder in 1991 after graduating from the University of Washington with a degree in Civil Engineering. He received his professional engineer license in 1997. Sprink joined Granite during the acquisition of Wilder and assumed the role as the Alaska Region Manager in early 2008. He will be relocating to Granite’s Northwest Group office in Salt Lake City in 2013. Effective Jan. 5, Derek Betts became the new Alaska Region Manager. Betts was the Nevada Region construction manager and has been with Granite for 17 years, and has served in a variety of roles in Granite’s Nevada Region. Betts began his career with Granite in 1995 after graduating from Oregon State University with a degree in construction engineering management. He progressed through the ranks in Nevada and was the Carson Area & Desert Operations Manager before becoming the Public Works Manager and Construction Manager. Betts has a background in portable construction work which will serve the Alaska Region well due to the variety of remote projects in the region.

Bob Roses was appointed to the Alaska Royalty Oil and Gas Development Advisory Board. Roses, of Anchorage, is a former math teacher and former member of the Alaska House of Representatives. He is also a past president of Superior Car Wash Systems of Alaska, past member of the Alaska Retirement Management Board, and past president of the Anchorage Education Association. Roses graduated from Alaska Methodist University, now known as Alaska Pacific University, with a degree in mathematics. Judge Jane Kauvar was appointed to the Fairbanks Superior Court. Kauvar has served the District Court in Fairbanks since 1981. In that role, she has also served temporarily as a Superior Court Judge in Fairbanks, Kenai, and Bethel. She has served as a Fairbanks Juvenile Treatment Court Judge, and currently serves as a magistrate training judge. Timothy Dooley was appointed to the Nome Superior Court. Dooley has served in private practice in Anchorage since 1993, primarily focusing on criminal, personal injury, maritime and employment law. He graduated from the University of Alaska Fairbanks with degrees in mining and history. Dooley has worked in a variety of industries including logging, firefighting, mining, oil and gas, and commercial fishing. He earned a juris doctorate from St. Mary’s Law School. Karen Kochenbach is the new chief of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-Alaska District regulatory division.  She assumes statewide responsibility for administering the regulatory program pursuant to Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act, Section 103 of the Marine Sanctuaries and Protection Act, and Section 404 of the Clean Water Act. Kochenbach formerly served as a section chief for the Corps’ Pittsburgh District where she led a team of eight regulators responsible for processing permit actions for oil, gas and coal mining projects in western Pennsylvania and West Virginia. She earned a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies from Nasson College in Maine in 1982. Four new individuals have joined their Alaska Community Foundation statewide board of directors: Penny Pedersen, Kate Slyker, Andy Teuber and Bill Sheffield. In Ketchikan, Pedersen is the executive director for PeaceHealth Medical Center. Prior to joining PeaceHealth, Pederson served on the PeaceHealth board, as well as many other boards for Alaska nonprofits. In Anchorage, Slyker is the executive vice president of client services with the Nerland Agency, a full-service advertising agency located in Anchorage. She received her bachelor’s degree in marketing and English from the Carroll School of Management at Boston College. In Kodiak, Teuber serves as the President and Chairman of the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium and as the CEO and President of the Kodiak Area Native Association. He holds an MBA from the University of Washington. In Anchorage, Sheffield has been a leader in business, government and public policy for most of the 56 years he has lived in Alaska. He served as Governor of the State of Alaska from 1982 to 1986 following a business career in which he built a company that became one of the largest private employers in Alaska and the Yukon Territory. Sheffield is the retired president and CEO of the Alaska Railroad Corp. and now serves as the vice chairman of its board. Perry Eaton and Lucy Mahan have joined First National Bank Alaska’s board of directors, the bank announced today. Eaton was born in Kodiak and grew up working on his father’s fishing boat. He lives in Anchorage and is a shareholder and director at Koniag Inc. He worked as a commercial lender for First National Bank Alaska early in his professional career, which included serving as founder and CEO of the Alaska Native Heritage Center, and as an officer in various capacities at Alyeska Pipeline Service Company. A licensed professional counselor who resides in Homer and has offices in Anchorage and Homer, Mahan graduated from Anchorage’s West High and earned degrees from the University of Colorado and Alaska Pacific University. Mahan owns and facilitates Transitional Counseling LLC. Becky Walters was also recently appointed Human Resources Manager by First National Bank Alaska’s board of directors. She has worked in the banking industry for more than 30 years in a number of different roles. Sue Hull of Fairbanks was sworn in as a member of the State Board of Education & Early Development at the board’s meeting in Juneau on March 7 for a five-year term. Hull is co-owner of Ben Lomond Inc., a property management and residential construction firm. She has held a seat on the Fairbanks North Star Borough School Board since 2004 and currently serves as president of the Association of Alaska School Boards. Additionally, she is a past president of the Alaska PTA. Michael Lyssy has joined the Anchorage office of aeSolutions as their safety and control systems group manager. Lyssy has more than 30 years of experience consulting industrial customers in the refining, chemical, and power industries, designing and implementing improvements to their alarm management programs. Christina Magill, MD, is now serving patients of all ages in the Mat-Su Valley at her newly opened office in the Providence Health and Service Building at 2250 S. Woodworth Loop, Suite 101 in Wasilla. Magill, of Alyeska Center for Facial Plastic Surgery and ENT, provides specialist care for all areas of the head, neck and face with comprehensive ear, nose and throat evaluation and treatment in addition to head and neck surgery. She also performs nose, ear, eyelid, and sinus procedures. She is highly experienced in facial surgery, including skin cancer removal and treatment, facial cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, and non-surgical facial rejuvenation. Magill is board-certified in otolaryngology and attained her medical degree from the University of Washington, and completed a residency in ear, nose and throat surgical subspecialty training at Washington University in St. Louis.

Isabelle Bornemann has been promoted to Director of Sales and Product for Explore Tours. Bornemann is a seasoned expert in Alaska tourism with an international influence. Born in Germany, Bornemann brings a fluency in the German language and the ability to provide personalized service to international clients. Bornemann’s experience and approach will enable her to offer top-notch service when guiding small group tours and create explorations of a lifetime for large group packages. Local nonprofit association Anchorage Gateway Rotary announced the results of recent elections for positions within the group. They are: President Elect Ken Miller; Vice President Dave Sheffrey; Treasurer Syl Fowlis; Secretary Victor Montemezzani; Directors Jake Collins, Kevin Mader and Ron Fassett. Jeffrey Davis, Dr. Larry Stinson, and David Morgan were reappointed to the Alaska Health Care Commission. Davis, of Anchorage, is president of Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alaska, and has nearly 25 years of experience in health care issues. He serves as the chair of the Alaska Comprehensive Health Insurance Association, as a board member of the Alaska e-Health Network, and is a co-chair, along with his wife Suzanne, of the 2013 American Cancer Society Wine and Food Festival. He earned a master’s degree in health care administration from the University of Washington and a bachelor’s degree in biology from Whitman College. Stinson, of Anchorage, is a board-certified anesthesiologist and pain specialist who is a co-founder of Advanced Pain Centers of Alaska. A University of Alaska Fairbanks and WWAMI graduate, Dr. Stinson is also a University of Washington adjunct clinical instructor. Morgan, of Anchorage, is the director of reimbursement for Southcentral Foundation. He is also the former chairman of the Municipality of Anchorage Health and Human Services Commission. He has worked in health care for more than 30 years, serving in Alaskan health care organizations’ community health center operations, financial planning, and government relations for much of that time. Britteny Matero was appointed to the Alaska Council on the Homeless. Matero, of Anchorage, is the division manager of public health initiatives and partnerships for the Municipality of Anchorage. She currently serves as a board member for RurAL CAP, the Hope Community Library, and is the Human Service’s Community Sections Chief for the Emergency Operations Center. She was recently appointed to the board of directors for the Anchorage Coalition to End Homelessness. Matero received her bachelor’s degree in applied linguistics at Portland State University. Suzie Klein was appointed to the State Vocational Rehabilitation Committee. Klein, of Chugiak, is the project coordinator at the Stone Soup Group, where she serves as a parent navigator for pediatric neurodevelopmental clinics throughout the state and in partnership with the State of Alaska. She is a board member of Alaska Career College. She has also worked as a recreation therapist and massage therapist, including as the owner of Bear Mountain Chiropractic and Healing Arts, Inc. in Chugiak. John Fugett was appointed, and Joseph Dingman Sr., Randall Jones, Ilina Saucedo, and Stephen Sundby were reappointed to the Alaska Mental Health Board. Fugett, of Anchorage, is the executive director of Consumer Driver Services LLC. He is the former director of adult services for Anchorage Community Mental Health Services, and has worked as a counselor and psychotherapist. Dingman, of Barrow, is the assistant fire chief with the North Slope Borough Fire Department and co-founder of the Alliance for Mental Health Issues. He is an affiliate faculty member at Ilisagvik College, and a longtime leader in emergency service training and programs. Jones, of Anchorage, has worked as a psychotherapist with Providence Behavioral Medicine Group since 1997. He also worked for 18 years at the Langdon Psychiatric Clinic, eventually serving as CEO from 1995 to 1998. Jones provided substance abuse and mental health services in Cordova, and also developed an inmate sex offender treatment program for the Alaska Department of Corrections. Saucedo, of Anchorage, is currently a Senate Page for the Alaska Legislature. Formerly, she served as an outreach and volunteer coordinator for the Alaska Youth and Parent Foundation. She has worked in a variety of other jobs since completing her high school studies, and is looking forward to enrolling in college in the fall of 2013. Sundby, of Cordova, is the clinical director of Alaska Family Services. He has also worked in behavioral health in Indiana, Texas, and at Bartlett Regional Hospital in Juneau. Marianne Kerr was appointed to Serve Alaska. The commission aims to engage Alaskans of all ages and backgrounds in community-based service and volunteerism as a means of community and state problem solving, and promotes participation in the AmeriCorps and Learn and Serve America programs. Kerr, of Anchorage, is an associate professor of 4-H and Youth Development with the UAF Cooperative Extension Service. Formerly, she worked with the Girls Scouts Susitna Council, Alaska Health Fair, Anchorage Center for Families, and Anchorage Senior Center. She earned a master’s degree in adult education from UAA and a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Minnesota.

Colin P. Fay is one of the 20 nominees for the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, or ASHRAE, New Faces of Engineering recognition program, a part of National Engineers Week. Fay is a mechanical engineer and sustainability specialist, PDC Inc. Engineers, in Anchorage. As part of the Fur Rondy Royalty tradition, the Lord & Lady Trapper duo attends official Rondy events as festival ambassadors. They are chosen by previous Lord & Lady Trappers at an annual gathering. John Carpenter is Lord Trapper. Carpenter has lived in Alaska since 1966. He spent many years in the media, and has been a pastor at Baxter Road Bible Church since 2010. He volunteers as an emcee at special events, especially activities that raise money for non-profits. Peggy McBride is Lady Trapper. She moved to Anchorage in 1975. She teaches music in the Anchorage School District. McBride’s community activities include choir director at first Congregational Church Anchorage and Master Director for Sweet Adeline’s International. Peggy is also a director for the award-winning Alaska Sound Celebration chorus; ASC is the organization that produces the Rondy Melodrama. She’s performed in or directed the melodrama for over 21 years. AMC Engineers announces that Deborah Morales, EIT, and Tyler Corey, EIT, have passed the Alaska State Board’s Fundamental of Engineering exam. Morales was hired in May 2012 as an intern, and became a full-time employee after graduating from University of Alaska Anchorage, or UAA with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. Morales is working on the University of Alaska Fairbanks Engineering Building, the Service High School Renovation, and the Napaskiak Replacement School. Tyler was hired in September 2012.  He also has a Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering from UAA. Tyler is currently working on the Service High School Renovation, the King Career Center Remodel, and the UAA Engineering Parking Garage. Heather Handyside is the new press secretary for U.S. Senator Mark Begich, in his Anchorage office. Handyside worked for the Municipality of Anchorage (MOA) from 2003-2009 and served a public safety policy advisor, director of emergency management and homeland security, and deputy municipal manager and had a public policy consulting company, Drawbridge Consulting. She served as communications director for the Scott McAdams campaign in 2010 specializing in messaging and media relations. Handyside has lived in Alaska since 1994. Bradley Reid + Associates announces Jeremy Hayes is now vice president of branding and strategy. In his new role, Hayes will expand his expertise to the branding and strategy for all Bradley Reid clients, working with the agency’s overall strategic team. Hayes graduated from the University of Nevada Las Vegas with a bachelor’s degree in Marketing and Business Administration. He spent nearly 10 years in healthcare marketing and advertising before joining the Bradley Reid team in 2008.  Bradley Reid’s new executive vice president is Tina Lindgren. Lindgren has more than 25 years of experience in management, marketing and communications. Prior to joining Bradley Reid, she was the founding president and COO of the Alaska Travel Industry Association and the executive director of both the Alaska Visitors Association and the Alaska Tourism Marketing Council. Lindgren has served as Bradley Reid account manager, senior strategist and most recently as vice president. Tina is the past recipient of the North Star Award and has been recognized by Travel Agent Magazine as one of the country’s most powerful women in travel. Michele Schuh is First National Bank Alaska’s new Chief Financial Officer. She is also the bank’s senior vice president. Schuh joined First National 10 years ago and now has more than 25 years of finance and accounting experience in Alaska and Oregon. A third-generation banker, Schuh is a graduate of Anchorage’s Dimond High School, the University of Washington and the Pacific Coast Banking School. In 2011, Schuh was inducted into the Anchorage ATHENA Society. Alaska Railroad Chief Engineer/Vice President of Engineering Tom Brooks will retire in May. Clark Hopp will replace him. Hopp has experience in railroad engineering and is familiar with many railroad stakeholders, given 12 years with the Alaska Railroad. He joined ARRC in 2001 as a capital projects manager, and in 2003, he became manager of civil projects. In 2011, Hopp was promoted to director of special projects, overseeing the two mega rail extension projects — Port MacKenzie Rail Extension and Northern Rail Extension, Phase One. He earned a degree in Construction Engineering Technology from Iowa Western College and completed additional engineering coursework at the University of Nebraska. Brooks joined the Alaska Railroad in 1986 as the engineering office supervisor. The next year, he was named manager of civil engineering, marking the first of several promotions during a 27-year career. Brooks became chief engineer in 1991, adding assistant vice president of projects in 2005 and vice president of engineering in 2010. Doug Swanson is the new business manager at Alaska Public Employees Association/AFT. Most recently employed at AFT-Wisconsin, Swanson has more than 30 years experience working for public employees.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from Mount Holyoke, and a Master of Fine Arts and a Master of Arts in museum studies from Tufts University. She has interned at various museums and non-profit organizations, both in the Lower 48 and Alaska, including a summer at the Alaska Museum of Natural History in Anchorage and work at the American Bald Eagle Foundation in Haines.   Lynne’ Doran has been named to the newly created position of Executive Director for Girdwood 2020. Girdwood 2020 is a community advocacy organization working with the Girdwood community and Alyeska Resort to improve infrastructure for Girdwood. In her role as executive director, Doran will work with the officers, directors and strategic partners of Girdwood 2020 to implement the group’s mission and strategic plan. Doran is a long time resident of Girdwood with significant experience in community project coordination and development. Doran is a graduate of the University of Minnesota in International Relations. Emi Banning, human resources supervisor at Denali Alaskan Federal Credit Union, recently earned certification as a Professional in Human Resources. To become certified, an applicant must pass a comprehensive examination and demonstrate a strong background of professional human resource experience. Banning has been working in Denali Alaskan’s HR department since 2010. Jake Askren has joined KeyBank in Alaska as a relationship manager and business specialist at the South Anchorage branch. Askren brings to KeyBank 14 years of banking experience, including 10 years focused on small businesses. He has served on the associate’s council for the Association of General Contractors of Alaska for the past four years.  CIRI Alaska Tourism Corp. announced several personnel changes. Chris Scheffer is the new general manager and New Rooms Division manager and Matt Herod is the new Rooms Division manager at Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge. Scheffer a veteran at running seasonal properties in Denali with both Aramark and NANA, recently as the GM at the Grand/Bluffs. He also spent five years with Hyatt Hotels and Resorts. Herod is also a veteran of the Denali seasonal hotel industry, and has spent the last five years at the Grand/Bluffs working his way up into the RDM position. CIRI Alaska Tourism also promoted Ron Wille to general manager of Kenai Fjords Tours. Wille has been with the company for more than nine years and has been acting as interim general manager for Kenai Fjords Tours for the past year. In 1992, Willie came to explore the National Parks in Alaska and specifically to backpack Denali National Park and Wrangell St. Elias. Wille currently holds U.S. Coast Guard 200 ton masters license and a 500-ton mate license. Tom Newins has been promoted to chief operating officer for Credit Union 1. Newins has been with CU1 since 1992. Over the past two decades, Newins has held several positions within Credit Union 1, through which he has gained experience in departments as far-ranging as Internal Audit, Marketing and Branch Operations. Newins also holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting.      KeyBank’s Alaska District Retail Leader Steve Campanella was awarded a diploma at commencement exercises during the 67th annual session of the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Sponsored by the 18 state bankers associations comprising the Central States Conference of Bankers Associations and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the school was established in 1945 to provide bankers with an opportunity for advanced study and research in banking, economics and leadership. Frank Ganley has accepted the regional construction engineer position Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, Northern Region. Ganley came to the department in 1999 and most recently served as a construction manager. Tracy Morris has been promoted to vice president of KeyBank in Alaska as a middle market relationship manager responsible for providing financial solutions to commercial clients, maintaining existing relationships and developing new business opportunities She began her banking career with KeyBank 18 years ago while studying business management at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Most recently, Morris worked in Key Private Bank where she developed and maintained enduring relationships with high net worth clients. Kevin McCormick has joined KeyBank in Alaska as a retail relationship manager at the Fairbanks Main branch. A Fairbanks native, McCormick is a 2011 graduate of the University of Arizona. Jazz Janda has been selected to manage KeyBank’s Ketchikan branch. Janda has more than 12 years of financial service and sales management experience. Alaska Court of Appeals Judge Joel Bolger was appointed as the 23rd justice of the Alaska Supreme Court. His appointment follows the retirement of Justice Walter “Bud” Carpeneti. Bolger first moved to Alaska in 1978. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a bachelor’s degree in economics and a juris doctorate. He began his Alaskan legal career in Dillingham as a VISTA volunteer attorney, and then supervised the Alaska Legal Services Corp. in Kodiak. In 1997, Bolger was appointed as a district court judge in Valdez, followed by an appointment to the Kodiak Superior Court. Since 2008, he has served as a Court of Appeals judge in Anchorage. Tim A. Feavel was promoted to manager for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-Alaska District Chena River Lakes Flood Control Project in North Pole. Feavel has served 21 years as a natural resource specialist and park ranger at the Chena Project. He now is responsible for operating and maintaining Moose Creek Dam, which protects Fairbanks and surrounding communities from flooding as well as managing natural resources and recreation on the project’s 20,000-acre land base. Feavel began his career as a forester at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-Rock Island District in Illinois while serving as an Army engineer officer on a two-year active-duty term assignment. Feavel was commissioned as an engineer officer in 1980 and served 28 years in the Army Reserve. For most of this time, he was assigned to combat heavy engineer units in Iowa and Alaska. Before retiring in 2008 as a lieutenant colonel, he served a year in Iraq as the base engineer/information operations at Camp Anaconda/Balad Airbase from 2006-07.

USKH Inc. recently named three new principals and three new associates. The firm’s new principals are W. Dwayne Adams Jr., Raymond Amsden and Jacob (Jake) Gerondale. The new associates are Ursula Dickeson, Sara Lindberg and Jared VanderWeele. Adams joined USKH in 2010 when his previous firm, Land Design North, was acquired by USKH and has nearly 40 years of Alaska experience. He is manager of USKH’s Landscape Architecture and Planning Division and a member of the firm’s board of directors. Amsden joined USKH in December 2010 after retiring from the Anchorage School District, where he was employed for 29 years and retired as the school district’s Facilities Director. At USKH, Amsden is the Building Sciences Director and Architectural Division Operations Manager. Gerondale is the manager of USKH’s Survey and GIS Division; he has been with the company since 2006 and has more than 13 years of experience working in the survey, GIS and engineering fields. Lindberg is USKH’s environmental services manager and joined the firm in 2006. She is a graduate of The Evergreen State College and received her master’s degree from Alaska Pacific University. She is a Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Lead and belongs to the Society of Wetland Scientists. VanderWeele joined USKH in 2007 and is the Assistant Fairbanks Regional Manager of Architecture. Dickeson is a technical writer and has been with the company since 1992 and telecommutes from her home in Arizona. Nicole Licht has been hired as sales and marketing director for Midnight Sun Home Care Inc. Licht has more than seven years combined experience in customer service, sales and marketing in health care industry in Alaska. She is from southern California and has been raising her family here in Anchorage for the last 13 years. University of Alaska Fairbanks students Rodney Hobby, Lucas Stumpf, Maggie Ann Beans and Amber Jones have each received $2,500 toward their tuition with Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarships. Hobby is working toward a major in biology at UAF’s School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences. Stumpf is also a student in the UAF School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences and is studying for a bachelor’s degree in fisheries with a minor in marine sciences. Beans is a freshman at UAF who is working toward a degree in electrical engineering. Jones is a freshman in UAF’s nursing program. She is currently applying for internships at local hospitals and study abroad nursing programs. Thomas Crowley Jr. created this scholarship program in 1994 to help young people primarily, but not exclusively, from rural Alaska communities. Gloria O’Neill was appointed and Dale Anderson was reappointed to the University of Alaska Board of Regents. O’Neill, of Anchorage, has served as president and CEO of Cook Inlet Tribal Council since 1998. She also serves as an Annie E. Casey Foundation Fellow and is a recipient of the University of Alaska Anchorage Alumni Humanitarian Award for her contributions to the community. Anderson, a lifelong resident of Juneau, has broad private and public sector experience, having spent 40 years in the financial services and tourism industries. He is an entrepreneur, and has served as legislative staff, commissioner on the Alaska Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission, and assemblyman for the City and Borough of Juneau. Camille L. Ferguson of Sitka has been selected as executive director American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association. Ferguson was director of economic development for the Sitka Tribe of Alaska for 16 years and has significant experience marketing to international visitors and working with the hotel, cruise, airline and gaming industries to develop Sitka tourism. She was the 2011 recipient of the Alaska Travel Industry Association’s Denali Award for Professionalism & Leadership, was most recently a hotel general manager in Sitka and served as interim executive director for AIANTA in 2011. Shirley Garcia has joined Denali Alaskan Home Loans as a senior loan originator. Garcia will be originating loans at the Denali Alaskan Home Loans Wasilla office at 1981 E. Palmer-Wasilla Highway, Suite 210, and the main Denali Alaskan Home Loans office located at 471 W. 36th Avenue, Suite 110 in Anchorage. Prior to joining the Denali Alaskan Home Loans team, Garcia worked as a loan officer for a local bank. Justin Justiniano has been promoted to branch manager at Denali Alaskan Federal Credit Union’s Minnesota branch. Justiniano has been with Denali Alaskan for nearly two years as a branch sales supervisor. Prior to joining Denali Alaskan, he was a branch supervisor at a local bank. Justiniano has worked in the financial industry since 2000, and earned his Associate’s degree in management in business practice from Charter College in 2005. Angelina Burney has joined Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s Anchorage office staff, where she will serve as an executive assistant and scheduler. Burney has more than a decade of community relations experience at the state and federal level working with elected officials, governing boards and senior management to implement public policy. Most recently, Burney was an aide to Eagle River Representative Dan Saddler as a member of his senior team on public events and public policy.  Before that, she worked for DOWL HKM and the Alaska Department of Commerce. Burney replaces former scheduler and assistant Amy Erickson, who departed in December to run the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles. Nikki Campbell Martin has joined the Alaska Oil and Gas Association as regulatory and legal affairs manager. Raised in Palmer, Martin is a seasoned legal professional with years of experience in the state, most recently as an associate attorney for Anchorage-based Foley & Foley PC. Martin also worked as a law clerk for Judge Andrew Guidi, and for the Western Resources Legal Center. Martin’s prior legislative positions include acting as a legislative aide to Alaska State Legislature House Majority Leader Ralph Samuels, and as a legislative correspondent for U.S. Senator Ted Stevens. Martin graduated from Colony High School in Palmer and received a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of South Carolina and a law degree from Lewis & Clark Law School.

Trevor Edmondson has been promoted to the position of vice president and general manager of The Petersen Group, an Anchorage-based homebuilder and land developer. Edmondson has more than 19 years experience in the project management and construction industry having most recently been the project development manager for The Petersen Group for the past two years. Edmondson will be responsible for managing both Alaska and North Dakota homebuilding and land development operations. Arni Thomson has been selected to be the first executive director of the Alaska Salmon Alliance. Thomson is the immediate past president of the United Fishermen of Alaska and the founding executive director of the Alaska Crab Coalition. The Alaska Salmon Alliance is a not-for-profit trade association comprised of commercial fishermen and seafood processing companies. Reuben Yost has been appointed deputy commissioner of the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, effective Jan. 16. Yost will oversee the divisions of Measurement Standards and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, the Alaska Marine Highway System and Special Projects. Yost has been with ADOT&PF since 1994 and previously served as the southeast region director of construction, maintenance and operations. He has a bachelor’s degree in industrial education and a master’s degree in zoology. John Schaff was recently appointed vice president and mortgage loan origination manager by First National Bank Alaska’s board of directors. Schaff oversees the bank’s mortgage loan origination staff. Owner of a degree in agricultural and resource economics from the University of California-Davis, Schaff started his banking career a decade ago as a mortgage loan originator. He’s worked in bank branch environments and as part of a national real-estate company. He transitioned into mortgage loan origination management in 2007. AMC Engineers has hired mechanical engineers Christian Dougherty and Dennis Hansen. Dougherty has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from University of Alaska Anchorage. He has been working on the UAA Beatrice McDonald Hall Building Renewal, the Dena’ina Health and Wellness Clinic, and the Napaskiak Replacement School. Hansen graduated cum laude from University of Alaska Fairbanks with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. He has been working on the Blood Bank of Alaska building, the UAA Seawolf Sports Arena and the UAA Engineering Building. ASRC Energy Services has hired Joel Whitley as general counsel. Whitely joins AES and its family of companies from Arctic Slope Regional Corp. where he served as senior corporate counsel. Before coming to Alaska, Whitley was an attorney at the law firm of Munger, Tolles & Olson in Los Angeles. He earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial and systems engineering from Georgia Tech and followed by a law degree from the University of Chicago. ASRC Energy Services also promoted Alan Growden to general manager of its E&P Technology subsidiary, which provides high-end technical consulting, project management, and on and off-site planning to the oil and gas industry. In addition to his new role, he will also continue as the senior business analyst for ASRC Energy Services’ professional services group that includes Regulatory and Technical Services, Engineering, E&P Technology, and Response Operations. Growden has been with the AES family of companies since 1994. USKH Inc. Executive Vice President D. Lance Mearig was recently certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources by the HR Certification Institute. Mearig, who has been with USKH since 1994, is responsible for risk management, firm administration, ownership transactions, and human resources. Mearig is a principal of the firm and is a registered professional engineer in Alaska, Washington, Idaho and Oregon. Sen. Mark Begich named Anchorage resident Robert Doehl as his new special assistant for military and veterans affairs. Doehl is replacing longtime Alaskan C.W. Floyd, who is retiring after more than eight years working for Begich, first in his capacity as mayor and later in the Senate office. A 14-year Alaska resident, Doehl recently retired as a colonel after serving as the vice wing commander of the 176th Wing of the Alaska Air National Guard. Doehl originally enlisted in the Army National Guard as an enlisted medic before being commissioned as an armor officer. His military career spanned more than 32 years. During his career, Doehl completed military pilot training; transferred to the Air Force; served in the active, reserve and National Guard components; and commanded six different units. In 2003, Doehl deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. In 2006 and 2007, Doehl played a key role in designing the organizational structure for the consolidation of Elmendorf Air Force Base and Fort Richardson. Since 2008, a substantial portion of his work has involved ensuring care and benefits are available for Airmen injured in the line of duty. While serving as a Reservist and Guardsman, Doehl also served as a trial attorney with the United States Department of Justice and an assistant attorney general for the State of Alaska.  Joan Fisher has been appointed interim executive director for Bean’s Café after the passing of long-term Executive Director Jim Crockett. Crockett served Bean’s Café as Executive Director from 2001 until his passing on Nov. 29, 2012. Fisher has worked in the non-profit health care sector for more than 30 years mainly in long-term care and primary medical care. Her focus in health care has been working with and advocating for poor and vulnerable populations needing affordable and equal services. For 19 years she worked at Providence Health and Services serving as the Administrator at the Mary Conrad Center for six years and from 1998 to 2012 worked at the Anchorage Neighborhood Health Center, Inc. as the executive director and strategic initiatives director. Dr. Matthew Hirschfeld and Doyon Ltd. President and CEO Aaron Schutt have joined the Rasmuson Foundation board of directors. Schutt joined Doyon in 2006 and previously served as senior vice president and chief operating officer. Prior, Schutt was an attorney for the national law firms representing tribal and Alaska Native corporations in transactional and business matters. Schutt earned his law degree from Stanford Law School and a master’s in civil engineering from Stanford University. Hirschfeld is a pediatric hospitalist and medical director of Maternal Child Health Services at Alaska Native Medical Center. Hirschfeld came to Alaska in 2005 from Seattle where he completed his training in pediatrics at the University of Washington and Seattle Children’s Hospital. Hirschfeld is the newborn metabolic screening coordinator for the Alaska Native Health System. Hirschfeld earned his medical degree and Ph.D. in experimental pathology from University of Utah, Salt Lake City, and bachelor’s degree in biomedical sciences from Montana State University. Schutt takes the place of departing board member Bobbi Quintavell, and Hirschfeld takes the place of Dr. Douglas Eby, whose two terms have expired. Several staff members at the Rasmuson Foundation have been promoted to new positions. Sammye Pokryfki has been promoted to vice president of programs. Cassandra Stalzer is now communications director. Aleesha Towns-Bain has been promoted to program officer. Towns-Bain manages the Sabbatical Program and Recover Alaska, a joint initiative of Rasmuson Foundation, Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority, Mat-Su Health Foundation, and the State of Alaska Department of Health and Social Services. Sharity Sommer will move into a program associate role. Previously, Sommer held the position of communications associate. Danielle M. Ryman has been promoted to partner at Perkins Coie. Ryman is a member of the Labor & Employment practice at Perkins Coie. Her practice focuses on defense and representation of employers, as well as counsel and advice on legal issues effecting today’s workplace. She defends employers in state and federal court, and before state and federal administrative agencies. She conducts workplace investigations, defends employers in union arbitrations, and represents management in labor negotiations. She also works closely with corporate legal counsel, executive management, and HR professionals to provide guidance on employment-related legal issues. Marcus Geist has joined USKH Inc. as an environmental analyst in the Anchorage office. Geist specializes in geographic information systems technologies. Geist has 15 years of experience. Most recently, he worked for The Nature Conservancy in Anchorage. He previously worked for the U.S. Army Alaska, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the North Carolina Division of Water Quality prior to his arrival in Alaska. Geist is a graduate of the Davidson College, and he received his master’s degree in environmental management from Duke University. Andria Agli was promoted to vice president, shareholder and corporate relations in December 2012 at Bristol Bay Native Corp. The company also hired three new employees at its corporate office: Suanne Fechtmeyer, Nancy Schierhorn and Kinka Parker. Agli is a BBNC shareholder from South Naknek who has worked for the corporation since 1992. She has held a variety of positions within the executive team and currently manages all of BBNC’s external and internal communications, along with all shareholder services. She holds a master’s degree in rural development from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Fechtmeyer joined BBNC in October 2012 as its corporate tax manager and brings more than 30 years of experience in tax consulting and corporate tax to her new position, and most recently was employed by KPMG. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in accounting, both from the University of Florida. Schierhorn joined BBNC in November 2012 as its associate general counsel. Shierhorn has long term family ties to the Bristol Bay region. Prior to joining BBNC, she worked as senior counsel at Patton Boggs LLP, and spent the last three years serving ExxonMobil Corp. in its efforts to permit and build a natural gas pipeline from Alaska’s North Slope. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Puget Sound and a Juris Doctorate from Williamette University. Parker is a BBNC shareholder from Togiak who joined BBNC this month as its natural resources specialist. Prior to joining BBNC, Parker worked for First Rate Financial as a mortgage loan processor. Parker holds an associate’s degree and is currently working toward a bachelor’s degree in rural development. Vanessa Norman has joined law firm Davis Wright Tremaine LLP as an associate in the Anchorage office. Prior to law school, Norman worked with Alaska Native Tribal entities, including the federally recognized Port Graham tribe, as well as with a number of Alaska Native corporations. She also has experience working with an international trade association focusing primarily on the seafood industry. Kim Rice has been appointed deputy commissioner of Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities. Rice will oversee the divisions of Design and Engineering Services, Program Development, Public Facilities, Design and Construction, and Statewide Maintenance. Her office will be located in Juneau and she will spend time in Anchorage as well. Rice has been with ADOT&PF since 1977 and previously served as the central region design and construction director. Rice received her bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Alaska in 1979. She is a licensed professional engineer, and was a 2001 finalist for Alaska Engineer of the Year award. Edward Yarmak has been named president and Eric Johnson has been named vice president of Arctic Foundations Inc. The election of new corporate officers follows the passing of company founder and long-time President Erwin “Erv” Long at age 91 during 2012. Yarmak has been employed by AFI since 1981 and is chief engineer involved with estimates, design, construction and quality control. He is a member of the ASCE and NSPE, and is the President-Elect of the United States Permafrost Association. Johnson has also been employed by AFI since 1981, starting as a production welder and has many years as the shop superintendent planning and coordinating all shop, yard, and personnel to maintain production schedules and quality. AFI has been developing, designing, fabricating, installing, and improving ground- freezing systems since its inception in the early 1970s.

Tiffany Tutiakoff has been named president of Northwest Strategies, a full-service advertising and public relations agency in Anchorage. She moves into a role that company owner Tim Woolston has served for more than a decade. Woolston continues as CEO. Tutiakoff has served as vice president of account services at NWS for the past four years, overseeing much of the company’s day to day operations account services and managing clients, such as the State of Alaska’s Tobacco Prevention and Control Program and the Hotel Captain Cook. Prior to becoming vice president, Tutiakoff held a variety of positions at NWS, learning and growing with the company.  Tutiakoff is an award-winning communications professional and published author with more than a decade of communications and commercial art experience. Of Athabascan and Yup’ik heritage, she has grown up and lived her adult life all over Alaska. Michael Campbell, manager of SIKU CxA, recently passed the Association of Energy Engineers examination and became a Certified Building Commissioning Professional. The certification covers all aspects of building commissioning, including project scheduling, roles and responsibilities of the project team, new building commissioning, retrofitting and recommissioning of existing buildings, system by system commissioning requirements, testing adjusting and balancing mechanical and electrical systems, including verification formulas and procedures, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system, project economic analysis, building code issues, and commissioning tools and technologies. The CBCP certification is one of the international building commissioning certifications recognized by the government to perform these services on government buildings. SIKU CxA is one of four construction companies of UIC Construction Services Mitchi McNabb has recently joined Birch Horton Bittner & Cherot as an associate attorney in its Anchorage office. McNabb’s practice emphasizes business law. Before joining Birch Horton Bittner & Cherot, she was a law clerk for the Hon. Donald MacDonald IV, U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Alaska, and the Hon. James K. Singleton, Jr., U.S. District Court for the District of Alaska. Originally from Alaska, McNabb received her juris doctorate from the Louis D. Brandeis School of Law in Louisville, Kent., in 2008 and a bachelor’s degree from the University of San Francisco, summa cum laude, in 2003. Amy Erickson has been selected to fill the position of Director at the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles after outgoing Director Whitney Brewster accepted a position with the Texas DMV in July 2012. Erickson began her job Jan. 7. Before accepting the position of director at the Alaska DMV, Erickson worked as the administrative director for U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski in Washington D.C., and Anchorage as a liaison for state and federal issues. She also served as a legislative and committee aide in the Alaska Legislature for several years. Colin Fay of PDC Inc. Engineers has earned two new specialized certifications. They include his Certified Energy Auditor certification as well as his LEED‐AP Operations and Maintenance (O&M) certification. Fay already held a certification as a LEED‐AP Building Design and Construction accredited professional. Working in PDC’s Anchorage mechanical department, Fay will use these certifications to aid clients in developing sustainable and cost‐effective green building practices and guiding project teams towards achieving their LEED certification goals. Chief Human Resources Officer Donald Smith is returning to the position of executive director of labor and employee relations at the University of Alaska effective Jan. 1. A longtime Anchorage resident, Smith concluded during the to the Fairbanks-based human resources position that the move to Fairbanks would have significant adverse economic impacts, prompting a return to his former position.  UA President Patrick Gamble also announced that he is appointing Associate Vice President of Budget Michelle Rizk as interim chief human resources officer. Rizk will continue her responsibilities with her budget position, as well as taking on the new duties. Gamble appointed Smith to the labor relations position in August 2011 because of his extensive expertise in the field. He filled the human resources position on an interim position beginning in December 2011, and on a permanent basis in August 2012. Rizk is a graduate of North Pole High School and the University of Alaska Fairbanks, from which she earned a bachelor’s degree in international business and a master’s degree in business administration in 2001. Rizk first served as the fiscal officer for the Statewide Office of Information Technology, where her duties included financial management and strategic planning. She joined the Statewide Office of Planning and Budget in 2006 as the director of budget and was promoted to her current position, associate vice-president of budget in 2008. Her current responsibilities include working with the campuses to develop the University of Alaska System’s operating and capital budgets. Charlene Ostbloom accepted the position of vice president of communications for Doyon, Limited, effective December 10, 2012.  Ostbloom joined Doyon in June of 2011 as the human resource service center manager. Previously, she worked as corporate communications director at Tanana Chiefs Conference, or TCC, where she was in charge of developing the messaging going out to its beneficiaries, including production of the Council, TCC’s newsletter. She also worked at Alyeska Pipeline Service Company for more than 10 years. She’s served on the board of directors of the Greater Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce, University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) Community & Technical College, and Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center.  Ostbloom will be in charge of external and internal communication initiatives for Doyon and will ensure communication strategies across the Doyon Family of Companies are aligned and support the strategic direction of the organization. Geri Simon, senior vice president of administration, stated, “I look forward to working with Charlene in this new capacity and believe her experience and enthusiasm will continue to be a great asset to Doyon and its family of companies.” Ostbloom is a Doyon, Limited shareholder from Nulato and holds a bachelor’s degree from UAF. Gov. Sean Parnell named Pat Kemp commissioner of the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities. Kemp has served as acting commissioner since October. Kemp began his career with the Department of Highways in 1971 as a rear chainman on a survey crew. He worked during summer breaks from college and began full time employment with DOT&PF in 1977. Kemp retired from the department in 2006. After retiring, Kemp maintained a private engineering office in Juneau. In 2011, he returned to the department as the deputy commissioner for Highways and Public Facilities. Kemp earned a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from the University of Washington and has been a registered professional engineer in the State of Alaska for more than 30 years. He was raised in Ketchikan and Juneau. Gov. Parnell reappointed Jack Burton to the Alaska Railroad Corporation Board of Directors. The board manages the Alaska Railroad Corporation and its assets. Burton, of Moose Pass, has worked for the railroad since 1964 as a track foreman, track laborer and track inspector. He served 14 years as president of the labor union local now known as the Alaska Railroad Workers, and represented railroad workers during the railroad’s transfer from federal to state ownership in 1985. Originally appointed by Governor Hickel, Burton has been reappointed by every governor since his initial term, and he is reappointed for a fifth term to a seat reserved for a member of a union that represents railroad employees. Gov. Parnell appointed Gary Dalton to the Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation Board of Trustees. The board of trustees manages and invests the assets of the Permanent Fund. Dalton, of Anchorage, has been the president of Latash Investments LLC since 2001. He previously served as chief financial officer and executive vice president at National Bank of Alaska for more than 20 years. Dalton is a board member of the Alaska Museum Foundation, and he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Puget Sound. He is appointed to an at-large seat. KeyBank has selected Amanda LeDesma to manage its branch in Soldotna. She most recently managed Key’s Kenai and Ketchikan branches. In her new position, she is responsible for the day-to-day operations as well as providing financial services, including investments and mortgages, to both small business and consumer clients. LeDesma has more than nine years of financial services experience and holds a state insurance license as well as series 6 and 63 securities licenses. A member of Kenai Rotary and the Salvation Army’s advisory board, she is currently completing a bachelor’s of business administration degree at the University of Alaska Southeast. He’s focused on improving the business climate in that neighborhood, nearby First National’s Eastchester campus.Matt Thon brings his experience as a personal banker to the cash management department. Born from community effort, Hilltop celebrates 30 years

Mountains and skiing go together like kids and snow. Hilltop Ski Area combines all four. Situated on the edge of Anchorage where the city meets the Chugach, Hilltop is a place for novice skiers to practice the downhill craft. “We do a lot of after school programs — Kinder Ski, Hotdoggers, that sort of thing. We’re a beginner area,” Hilltop CEO Steve Remme said. The Kinder Ski and Hotdoggers programs offer after school lessons for kids from ages 4 to 16 years old. A lifelong skier himself, Remme said he never envisioned running a ski area as his career, but he said it has its own built-in rewards. “There’s a certain amount of gratification standing out there and watching these little four and five year-olds coming down the hill for the first time just grinning ear to ear,” he said. “It’s such a pleasure to know that those kids probably are never going to stop doing that.” A nonprofit, Hilltop is owned by Youth Exploring Adventure Inc. This winter marks 30 years for the ski area, but its origin goes back to the late 1960s, Remme said. It was then that a group of parents from the Hillside neighborhood formed Hilltop Youth Inc. “Mostly, along the Hillside here, it was all homesteads and they were all pretty far apart and there wasn’t really any organized activities for all the kids,” he said. Hilltop Youth Inc. began with a donated milk truck that parents filled with books to make what Remme called a “roving library.” Shortly after, a neighborhood playground was constructed and a towrope was installed near the entrance to what is now the ski area. Remme said the 160-acre parcel that makes up Hilltop Ski Area was originally a military tract, donated to the Anchorage Municipality in the late 1970s. In 1982, with the state “flush with oil money,” Remme said Hilltop Youth Inc., the precursor to Youth Exploring Adventure Inc., received grant money to purchase the chair lift, which allowed Hilltop Ski Area to come into being. The following year another grant was awarded to complete construction and that’s when Remme joined the organization. Installing the chair lift left Hilltop Youth Inc. at a crossroads, Remme explained. What had been a towrope overseen by volunteer parents on weekends was about to become a seven day-a-week operation. “We wanted to have rentals so people could rent some gear, go out and get a lesson and learn a lifelong sport,” Remme said. “In addition to that, something unexpected, was we created all these jobs.” Hilltop Ski Area employs more than 100 people every winter. Most are high school and college-aged; some have never worked before. “For a lot of my employees — and I’ve been here 30 years — it’s their first job ever, but they love it. We try to create a pretty good atmosphere for people that have never worked before and instill good work habits from the very beginning,” he said. Hilltop operates on an annual budget of about $1.2 million. Remme said roughly half of that goes out in employee compensation. The remainder goes into updating rental inventory, and when conditions require, making snow to cover 33 acres of runs. Remme said years with little snow accumulation, such as this year so far, can be a challenge for Hilltop. “The poor snow years do affect us even though we make our own snow because it’s top of mind. When (people) don’t go out to their driveway and shovel their walk they don’t think about all the snow and going skiing,” he said. Hilltop’s youth oriented nature and its location on the edge of the city make it a perfect “babysitter,” Remme said. Parents often drop their kids off for a day of skiing and then head into Anchorage to run errands. Others stay and get some exercise themselves. The Nordic Ski Association of Anchorage maintains a network of cross-country trails that begin right alongside Hilltop’s driveway. “I see it all the time. Parents come in and drop off their kids, put them in a lesson, go back to the car and put on the cross country gear and take off and do like a 10K and come back and have hot chocolate with their kids and go,” Remme said. Hilltop offers 12 different programs for parents who want to get their kids involved in downhill skiing, or who want to learn themselves. The programs are broken down by age and ability level. Mark DeHertogh is the ski school director at Hilltop. He said the full-day ski camp, run on weekends and over the holidays, will usually include up to 100 kids learning how to ski. Hilltop also offers private lessons for children and adults every day of the week along with its after school programs. For him, Hilltop is a way to get active during a long winter, DeHertogh said. “The reason I like it is, living in Alaska, if you don’t get out and do something in the winter you’re going to go stir-crazy,” he said. DeHertogh began his tenure there when Special Olympics Alaska moved its training program from Alyeska to Hilltop seven seasons ago. He was coaching Special Olympics skiers at the time. “We do five days a week with Special Olympics,” he said. Special Olympics Alaska holds its annual ski and snowboard competitions at Hilltop and in 2001 it was the site for the ski and snowboard events in the winter Special Olympics World Games. Remme said hosting the World Games provided Hilltop an opportunity to update its facilities. The ski area received a $1.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development through the efforts of Special Olympics to build its current pro shop. “We hosted the snowboard venue for the first time that it was ever in the games,” Remme said. “It was a real exciting thing for us. We got a new building, we upgraded our lift from a double to a triple, and we had people from all over the world come here.” Elwood Brehmer can be reached at [email protected]

She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., and a master’s degree in social work from Boston College.
