Sale of $240 million in bonds to finance construction of the Goose Creek Correctional Center in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough has put the project back on track, with construction to begin in late spring.


Shell will seek rehearing on Beaufort Sea drilling decision
Shell Oil said Dec. 19 it will file a petition with the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals asking for a rehearing of the court's decision to block Alaskan Beaufort Sea drilling. The company also said it will not plan drilling or seismic activity in the area in 2009 because of an injunction against exploration issued by the appeals court.

Trustees challenge EPA on toxic wastewater discharges decision
An opening brief filed Dec. 15 in a lawsuit in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco seeks to overturn a federal permit that allows oil companies to discharge increasing wastewater discharges into Cook Inlet.

Glass recycling bagged in Anchorage as a result of economic downturn
A downturn in the economy, which has left businesses scrambling for markets, will send up to 150 tons of glass a month straight to the Anchorage dump, rather than recycling bins, beginning on Jan. 5.
