ANCHORAGE (AP) — The summer salmon fishing season is about to get underway in Bristol Bay, and one federal agency wants to make sure boats are ready.

The Coast Guard says it will offer dockside examinations of commercial fishing vessels in Dillingham and King Salmon from June 9-20. Examinations also will be available in Egegik from June 9-13.

The season officially starts June 1, but the Coast Guard says most boats will be out June 15 through July 15.

The Coast Guard in a release says its exams will focus on safety, such as having proper items like fire extinguishers and emergency locator beacons, and checking the conditions of immersion suits.

No fines or penalties will be issued if problems are found.
