Race's only five-time champion withdraws

(AP) — Musher Rick Swenson — the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race's only five-time champion — has withdrawn from the 2013 race.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (http://is.gd/0iJuag) says that the 61-year-old musher from Two Rivers has withdrawn from the race for personal reasons.

Iditarod race director and race marshal Mark Nordman told the News-Miner that Swenson informed him Thursday that he would not be on the trail this year in the 1,000-mile race from Anchorage to Nome. He says he expects Swenson to be back next year.

Swenson has started the race 35 times and finished 33 of them. He won in 1977, 1979, 1981, 1982 and 1991.
