Morris Alaska Media
Morris Communications Corp., headquartered in Augusta, Georgia, traces its history back to a single newspaper founded in 1785. It now owns 40 newspapers - including 31 dailies - nationwide, and is involved in a variety of related businesses, including radio broadcasting, commercial printing and outdoor advertising.
Morris first made its presence known in Alaska more than 30 years ago and since then has been committed to making those communities which it serves better informed and better places to live.
Morris Communications entered the Alaska marketplace in 1969 with the purchase of Juneau's daily newspaper, the Southeast Alaska Empire, later renamed the Juneau Empire. In 1990, Morris expanded its geographic range by acquiring the Peninsula Clarion daily, which serves Kenai and Soldotna. By mid-1995, Morris became established in Anchorage as the new owner of Alaska magazine, an international publication, and later that year purchased the Alaska Journal of Commerce in Anchorage, a statewide business weekly. In 1996 Morris purchased the Alaskan Equipment Trader, a specialized publication in Anchorage, and in 1997, The Milepost, a guidebook known as "The Bible of North Country Travel since 1949."
Recent expansions by Morris Communications in America's last frontier involve both the purchase and start-up of several publications. Purchases include the weekly Alaska Star, serving Eagle River and Chugiak, and the weekly Homer News, as well as Destination Alaska, a tour guide for passengers of cruise ships. New publications are the Alaska Military Weekly, a free newspaper distributed to military personnel throughout the state, the Alaska Oil & Gas Reporter, a monthly newspaper covering the oil and gas industry, and the Best Read Guide/Anchorage, a tourist publication.
In 1998 Morris expanded its Anchorage operations in a new direction - radio - with the purchase of six radio stations: KBRJ-FM, KEAG-FM, KFQD-AM, KHAR-AM, KMXS-FM and KWHL-FM.
Morris Communications Corp. is committed to providing quality information to Alaskans statewide.
