Holidays and your Health

Dec 12, 2011 - 12:02 PM

The temperatures have dropped, as have the leaves, and now the snow is falling. It can only mean one thing…the holiday’s are right around the corner.

For many of us the holidays are a time of joy, family gatherings and tradition. For some, the holidays can be stressful, lonely or even depressing.

Whether the holidays are a happy or sad time for you, it is important to learn how to minimize stress and maximize control by practicing healthy behaviors. Take some time to focus on ways to better manage stress by:

  • Eating healthy – Eat small portions of holiday treats; Pay attention to when you feel full and then stop eating; Reduce the fat, sugar and salt in your recipes
  • Being physically active – Get outside for a 10-15 minute walk if your normal workout routine is interrupted
  • Getting adequate sleep – Set a bedtime and stick to it so you’re getting at least 7 hours of sleep per night
  • Taking time for personal relaxation – Find at least 10 minutes a day for quiet time

If you’ve got some time and are looking to do something that could make a difference in other people’s lives, look into the volunteer opportunities with a local organization such as the Food Bank of Alaska, The Salvation Army, or one of the many community organizations that could use some extra hands during the holidays. Helping others can be one of the most gratifying and soul-filling actions you can take! Make this your best holiday season yet!
