Transportation Department says Denali Highway open

FAIRBANKS (AP) — The Alaska Department of Transportation says the Denali Highway is officially open for the summer.

Spokeswoman Meadow Bailey tells the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (http://bit.ly/KONmu6) the 135-mile road connecting the Parks and Richardson highways opened last week.

It runs between Cantwell and Paxson but is not maintained in the winter.

Bailey says the mostly gravel road is a little rough and crews will be performing maintenance throughout the summer.
