Fire Island turbines online, begin powering SouthcentralANCHORAGE (AP) — All 11 wind turbines on Fire Island are now generating power for Southcentral Alaska. Officials at Cook Inlet Region Incorporated say they’ve been testing the turbines and transmission lines for nearly a month now. And Sept. 24 it became official — all of them are feeding into the grid. |

Commentary: Alaskans shouldn’t forget Permanent Fund’s purposeThe Alaska Permanent Fund Corp. transferred $605 million to the state this summer to cover the cost of paying dividends to every eligible Alaskan. In 2011, it transferred $801 million. Everyone can see the result: The 2012 dividend amount, to be announced at 11 a.m. today, will be much smaller than last year’s. This might be a trend with which we should get comfortable. |
