Concern over the European debt crisis and a double dip slowdown in the U.S. spurred a flight to quality and search for safe haven assets in the third quarter. Despite the downgrade of U.S. debt to AA+ in July, investors flocked to Treasury bonds sending their yields to record low levels and the U.S. dollar higher in value. The dollar rallied 5.7 percent against a basket of currencies. Thirty-year Treasury bonds gained 31 percent (that’s no typo) as their yield dropped 150 basis points to 3 percent at quarter end.
